A week had passed since the art exhibition, and the air was still heavy with the memories of that night. For Sunoo, the days had been a blur of worry, sadness, and hospital visits. His grandmother's sudden illness had shaken the Kim family to its core.
The hospital room was bathed in the soft glow of sunlight filtering through the curtains, casting a warm and comforting ambiance. Sunoo sat by his grandmother's bedside, a small smile on his lips as he carefully peeled an apple for her. His nimble fingers worked skillfully, the repetitive task giving him a sense of calm amidst the storm of emotions he felt.
His grandmother's frail form rested against the pillows, her eyes filled with fondness as she watched him. "You know, Sunoo, you've always been such a gentle soul," she remarked, her voice tinged with affection.
Sunoo chuckled softly, his gaze never leaving the apple. "Well, I learned from the best, Grandma."
She let out a soft chuckle, her eyes crinkling with mirth. "Oh, you sweet talker."
As he continued peeling, his thoughts drifted to his family. His older brother's absence hung heavily in the air, a weight on his heart that he couldn't shake off. He knew his brother was sick, and the fact that he was so far away worried him. But his brother had made him promise not to worry, to focus on his own studies and career.
"How's your brother doing?" his grandmother's voice broke through his thoughts, her gaze piercing and knowing.
Sunoo sighed, setting the apple down and turning his attention to her. "He's getting better, Grandma. He's in good hands."
She smiled softly, reaching out to pat his hand. "I know he is. And I know he's counting on you to take care of things here."
Sunoo nodded, his eyes flickering with determination. "I won't let you down, Grandma. I'll do my best."
"I know you will, my dear." Her voice held a mix of pride and assurance.
As they continued talking, the room felt cocooned in the warmth of their bond. The stories she shared about his childhood and his brother's mischievous antics brought laughter to the room, a bittersweet reminder of happier times. Sunoo cherished these moments, treasuring the connection he had with his grandmother.
"You remember the time you and your brother tried to build a treehouse in the backyard?" she chuckled softly, her eyes sparkling with nostalgia.
Sunoo smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Of course, Grandma. How could I forget? It was a disaster."
His grandmother's laughter filled the room. "Yes, it was quite a sight to see the two of you covered in mud and leaves. But you were determined to build that treehouse, no matter what."
Sunoo's smile widened as he handed her a slice of the freshly peeled apple. "Yes, we were quite the pair, weren't we?"
After a while, the nurse entered the room, announcing that visiting hours were almost over. Sunoo reluctantly rose from his seat, pressing a gentle kiss to his grandmother's forehead. "I'll be back tomorrow, Grandma."
