On the eve of the kidnapping...
The boy who calls himself Lamark is sitting on his bed in his room in the clinical looking place, looking at his hands. Through a small gap in the curtain covering the transparent wall of his room, men carrying a new bed can be seen. Lamark looks up from his hand, which he's been staring at for a while and his orangish eyes track the movements on the other side of the curtain. An expression of guarded thoughtfulness passes over his features. He looks down at his hand and expression becomes one of focus. In the palm of his hand, yellow metal starts to appear and his face changes to a goat-like appearance with small black lumpy horns. The metal begins to take the shape of a knife.Lamark visibly trembles with effort and the knife takes on a more and more distinct appearance. Eventually, he holds a length of yellow metal shaped like a kitchen knife; streaks of bluish white runs along the length, like captured lightning. He tests the edge and winces as he pulls away the finger, a droplet of blood forming.Small beeps can be heard from the door and Lamark reverts to human features, as the knife dissolves in a small shower of sparks. He jumps up from the bed where he was sitting, just as the door open and the man known as Papa Brand enters. "Hello 2-13. What were you doing just now?" the man enquires in a casual tone. "J-just practicing," the boy stutters and makes a fist of the hand with the cut finger. "Wanted to get the er.. cog. Cog right this time." Papa Brand looks at Lamark with a dubious expression. "Well, let's see it, then. I'll just stay till you're ready to go again," Papa Brand eventually says and closes the door behind him. "While we wait, I came to tell you that we plan to add some new friends for you here. We just need them to pass quarantine."
