Five years ago.

At the clinical looking place with the room that have transparent walls, the boy is holding on to his pillow, as men in white paper suits are cleaning the room. The man with the white beard gestures for the boy to follow him out of the door to the walkways. "Come with me, 13-2. You're getting a new room. One that has more privacy, now that you're coming of age," the man says in a friendly tone. Behind his glasses, his eyes remain devoid of emotion. The boy looks around the room with an anxious expression. "Wh-where is my new room, Papa Brand?" he asks in a trembling voice. "We have to go on the elevator. That's going to be a new experience, isn't it?" the man called Papa Brand answers, his tone growing a little impatient. The boy and Papa Brand exit the room that has been the boy's home for as long as he can readily remember and walks along the walkways. In the room across from them, the girl with the electrodes strapped to her nearly shaven head follows them with her corn flower blue eyes. [Bye, Goatface, see you later.] the boy hears in his mind. The boy's step falters and he makes a face. [Shut up,] he hears himself say and stops. [I can..talk to you?] He asks confused. [If I let you,] the girl explains in his mind. [I'm Stella, what's your name?] She asks. [Uh. 13-2. I'm 13-2,] the boy replies as he begins to walk again. [That's what they call you,] the girl's voice sneers in his head. [What do you call yourself?] Stella waits for a reply. [Y-you can do that?] The boy stops at the elevator door, together with Papa Brand. He looks shocked. ['Course you can, silly. Just don't let them know. Now, hurry up, I don't think I can keep talking to you when I can't see..] the girl's voice is cut off, as the elevator doors close behind the boy. A short ride later, the boy called 13-2 and Papa Brand step out on another floor. Here there're more rooms; they all only have one transparent wall. ^[Lamark], the boy thinks to himself. He doesn't get a reply.
