The youth who picked the name Lamark is in his room, doing stretches, when he hears the elevator.Curious, he moves up to the transparent wall of his quarters and tries to find an angle where he can peer past the curtain, squishing his face up against the wall. He can almost hear the voices of four men.
[ The fetchers,] he thinks, referring to the uniformed man who came to take Stella.
This time, it would be more apt to call them Bringers, however. Lamark just catches a glimpse of a stretcher with a person on it, dressed in the same style of white t-shirt and tight-fitting trousers as Lamark himself wears.The four men carry the stretcher to one of the adjacent rooms. Behind them follows a slim man with dirt-blonde hair and the lab coat of a Papa.
A bit later, the four Fetchers come back past Lamark's view, their movements rippling the curtain so that he catches sight of them leaving.The four uniformed men pause briefly at the far end of the transparent wall, from where Lamark is sitting on the bed. There's the sound of the locks on the door being unlocked and Papa Brand steps inside, closing the door behind him.
"Hello 13-2. How're you feeling?" the man asks in a monotone voice. " I'm good, thank you, Papa Brand," Lamark replies, having stood up, when the man entered. "That's good, 13-2. That's good. Are you ready to practice?" Lamark raises his head. "Yes, Papa Brand. " Lamark hesitates, before asking: "Papa Brand. Can I ask what's going on? There were men going past with something. " Papa Brand asks, "How did you know?" He looks at the transparent wall. "Of course. The curtain was shifted, when they moved past. Yes. Remember the new friends I mentioned? One of them has just arrived, but he needs to be checked by Papa Gregg for a while, before you can meet him. Now, let's begin.
Some time later, Papa Brand and Lamark are seated at the table in Lamark's room. Both appear quite human. The adult is watching his watch and when a certain amount of time has passed, he looks up. "Alright, 13-2, it appears your refractory time is directly linked to the duration of the manifestation. If that is correct, you should be able to remanifest the cog.. " he pauses "now." With an obedient air, Lamark raises his hand palm up and looks concentrated. Immediately, his facial features change to that of the goat-like appearance with black horns curving gently back over the top of his head. In his hand, a cog of the yellow metal with blue streaks appears. "Excellent, 13-2. Excellent. This time you've got the shape nearly perfect. Great work," Papa Brand praises. "Thank you, Papa Brand," the youth replies.
Outside the transparent wall, the slim man with dirt-blonde hair and lab coat, who followed the four men earlier walks by, holding up a device to his mouth and speaking into it. It's not possible to hear what he says through the wall.
