Forward to 2028.
18? No, that was last year's birthday. He was 19 now. He remembered the day. It's hard to remember when everyday looks the same. Nothing to differentiate between morning, noon and evening. Dylan looks in the mirror. Hairy stubble covering his lower half of his face. His eyelids sunken and sleepy. "Happy birthday. You look like hell." He smiles then drops it. He walks over to his bed. His bed was neatened. On the bed was an old headset. A Walkman. "You get one special item from the tray, 18-8." Papa Gregg stood before him, a day ago with that smug smile holding out a grey tray with special items. Atleast it had some classics. He kneeled down, tilted his head and looked under for his combat knife. After making some friends down at Combat, he managed to sneak one with him. He had been practicing over the years. Learning to perfect it everyday. He needed to be able to convince. His power could never reach the surface. Dylan swung the knife and practiced. Practicing the different skills and combos. Breathing, panting as his arms swung and swayed. Papa Gregg walked in. Just in time to see Dylan training. He has them wrapped around his finger. "Nicely done, 18-8", Papa Gregg begins, "today's training will start after lunch. The big tests are next week so we will be applying more pressure. " Dylan stopped, dropping his hands down at his sides. He nodded and said, "Yes Papa Gregg." Papa Gregg walked Dylan out of the room, to the cafeteria. He walked over to the table where he had seen his friends rather nervous. Linda biting on her nails, Roach looking straight ahead, red patches growing up his neck. Manny had gotten up and left. Not bothering to pick up his lunch. Dylan walked over, set his tray down and smiled around. "Hey guys. It's my birthday today, not my funeral." Dylan joked. Linda sniffed and forced a smile. "Happy birthday Dylan", she stopped fiddling and turned her attention to him. Dylan whispered a thank you, took in a mouthful of his food. "Why the long faces guys? And hey. Where's Josh?" Dylan looked around, and then back at the table. Roach looked up, his lips flickering but no words coming out. He looked down then up and began. " Dylan, Josh got an owner today. He was so happy. What if they hurt him? If-If he does something wrong? Or they dump him like they did with 10-9?"Dylan dropped his food down. It was happening. Everything was falling apart. Right here. Josh was fine and in so much danger than he was in here. Now that he was out there. Dylan looked at them and swallowed. He gazed into their unawake eyes. He had to tell them what happened to 10-9. To Bobby. Dylan opened his mouth, wanting to talk but this would destroy them. Knowing their friend was out there on his own, and could possibly wind up dead. They were already devastated, broken with the fact that he was gone. "It'll be okay guys. We will figure out a way to contact him. Josh is smart and great at what he does. Everything will work out." Dylan spoke but as he said this, he felt that crushing feeling inside. He knew the real danger was out there, and not here. Josh was in real danger, and Dylan hoped he was being smart.
