Old Times Sake

Alix let out a low groan as she pulled into her old university parking lot. Putting the car in park, she sighed and leaned back against the seat. Watching as the cars trickled in slowly. It's alumni weekend, and somehow Alix's best friend El had convinced her to come. In reality, Alix wanted to be anywhere but here, literally anywhere else. The last time she was here, she swore it would be the LAST time. Nothing says goodbye and good riddance quite like a broken heart. Startled by a knocking on her car window, Alix looked over to see her best friend laughing. "Come on slow poke, or else we'll miss the best seats" El said. Alix sighed and took her keys out of the ignition, there's not backing out now. Grabbing her coffee, she climbs out of the car. "You'd think", Alix stated, "you get tired of scaring the crap out of me". El chuckled as the two ladies walked to the building, shrugging "If that day comes, send me for a psych consult". Alix chuckles softly and shakes her head.

They make their way into the building, Alix letting out a slow breath. "Hey", el nudges her lightly, "you'll be fine. She who shall not be named isn't on the speaking list. I checked". With a soft nod, Alix acknowledges what her friend is saying. Making their way over to check-in, a woman squeals and comes over to them, pulling them into a hug. Shay, the third musketeer in the trio. "When El told me she convinced you to come, I thought she was joking!" El and Alix groan softly as Shay hugs them tighter. "Surprise", Alix says with a slight hint of laughter in her voice. Shay leans back and cups the woman's cheeks. "You still look the same....gah!" Alix looks down ad blushes softly, making El and Shay laugh. "And still the same blushing babe", Shay chuckles, "Come on. Lets get checked in and go get the good seats!". "That's what I said", El quips, "but someone is running on turtle mode this morning" pointing to Alix with her thumb. Alix chuckles and shakes her head softly, "I am not. I'm just....waiting for the coffee to hit". El and Shay hum, exchanging a look, both knowing that Alix is beyond nervous being back here after what happened.

The ladies check in, taking their alumni packets and lanyards, making their way to the lecture hall. While El and Shay catch up, Alix trails behind them. Silently cursing El for convincing her to come to this stupid event. When El first sent her the text, asking her if she was going, Alix wanted to say "new phone, who's this?", but refrained. Instead, she told El that she would think about it, hoping (and praying) that she would forget about it. Much to Alix's dismay, El didn't forget about it and asked her about it every couple of days. Finally Alix caved, and the look of victory on El's face, you'd think she scored the winning World Cup goal. It has been 5 years, since Alix left and swore she'd never be back, and yet by some cruel twist of fake here she was. Snapping out of her thoughts when Shay snaps her fingers next to Alix's ear. "Hello? Earth to Alix", Shay chuckles, "you in there?" Alix hums then nods, "Oh, sorry. Just thinking". "Well, stop it", Shay says, "we're going to have a nice relaxing weekend". El looks at Shay with a quirked eyebrow, "we need to work on your definition of 'relaxing' because listening lectures all weekend doesn't qualify as 'relaxing'. Shay rolls her eyes, "would you stop busting my balls for one moment?" El hums then looks at the woman, "Never".

The trio chuckles softly then takes their seats in the back row. El gets her iPad out so she can take notes, Alix hands Shay a pen so she can write her notes. The stark contrast between her friends: the one that needs everything typed out and one who would rather write everything. Alix sighs and takes another pen out of her bag, lightly tapping it against the table, humming and flipping through the lecture notes that they picked up on the way in. Shay chuckles, "Alix, would you chill? It's not like we're about to be quizzed on this stuff." The woman looks at her friend and smiles softly, "Sorry, old habit."
The three ladies sit and talk softly while they wait for the lecture to begin. El's eyes go wide when she nudges Shay. The woman looks at her friend confused then follows her eyes, mumbling under her breath, "oh fuck". Alix overhears Shay and looks at her friend, "everything okay over there? Need to poop?" Shay hums then clears her throat, "Al, maybe we should skip this lecture". Giving her friend a confused look, "Why?", looking at the schedule, this was one lecture she was looking forward to. Shay gave her friend a pleading look, "Al, just-", being cut off when the speaking lightly tapped on the mic.

"Okay, everyone. I wanted to thank you for coming to today's lecture...". Alix held her breath when she recognized the voice. How could she not recognize the voice of the woman she had loved for 2 years. The woman who crushed her heart and soul. Keeping her gaze down on the piece of paper in front of her, Alix let out a slow breath trying to calm her racing heart. Taking a deep breath, Alix slowly looks up, locking eyes with her old professor. Or should I say, ex lover. A moment passes, while the professor continues to speak. Alix swears she can hear every ounce of blood pumping through her body. The woman smiles softly then looks away. El leans over and whispers, "Alix I swear I checked the speaking list. She wasn't on it". Alix hums and turns to look at El, whispering back, "It's fine, El". Taking another slow breath, Alix lightly taps her pen thinking to herself, "don't have an anxiety attack....just breathe. She isn't worth this reaction Alix. You're OK"

Alix looks back up, locking eyes once again with the professor. Those gorgeous brown eyes, holding a hint of mischief in them. Humming softly, Alix notices that the woman before looks just as delicious as she did all those years ago. Her long wavy hair, cascading down her back, her gorgeous brown eyes, her perfect body. Damn, she looked really good. Mentally kicking herself, lightly shaking her head. Thinking to herself, "No Alix. Do NOT go there. She broke your heart." Sighing as she starts to take notes and what the professor is talking about. Shay and El look at each other then at Alix. Feeling their eyes, she looks up at them. "I'm fine", she whispers. El nods then goes back to listening to the lecture, but Shay continues to look at Alix. Sighing softly, Alix gives Shay a look and motions to the lecture. Shay sighs, "Al". "Shay, I'm fine...really" whispers Alix. Leaning over Shay whispers, "Then tell that to your face...". Alix sighs and nods, looking back down at her notes then keeping her eyes trained on the PowerPoint, avoiding her former professors eyes. This is going to be torture.
