~Part 1~
~Annabelle Cortez~

"Merry Christmas, Anna" George's manly gruffy voice cheered through the speaker of Annabelle's mobile phone.

"Merry Christmas, George. What do you want?" Annabelle asked, it was for the best to try and be polite even though her words were rude. But the caller was not someone Annabelle favored to be speaking to any day of the year.

"You remember how you got Everyone Christmas presents except for me?" George reminded, his tone that of a loan shark demanding their money back.

Annabelle wanted to tell George she did not like him, hell she did not owe him any gifts as they were not family. To her, of course. Her grandmother thought otherwise.

"Yes, it was only 2 days ago" The man continued with precision, desperation behind his pride. It was important, enough to push his ego aside and remind the cold woman of her silly promises.

But Annabelle was frustrated. Why was a grown ass man calling her at night bothering her over a lie she had told inorder to deceive her grandmother?. Did he not get the hint that she purposely chose not to give him anything for Christmas as he did not deserve her kindness.

"You told the family that you will make it up for me. I need you to do me a favor" The man scratched his sweaty beard, the sound making Annabelle cringe.

It was time to end this phone call.

"What is it?" The woman asked, deciding there was no reason to hide her impatience with a man who could not understand indirect suggestions.

"I need you to be my daughter's psychiatrist" George finally made known of his request, fingers crossed. He needed this to work. Despite his dislike for the prideful psychiatrist, he was aware of her proven talent in the psychology department.

"I don't work in that department anymore George. Goodnight" Annabelle went to hang up the call but before her thumb could tap over the red option displayed over her screen, George urgently spoke,

"She recently tried to commit suicide and attacked her mother in less that a week. Please you are the best at these things. I can't lose my daughter, please" George begged, if he was in front of Annabelle. He would surely be on his knees, that was how desperate he had been.

"I can not help you" Annabelle's voice held finality before she tapped over the end call button.

She sighed, a headache was coming. Just thinking about what George said left her  mood a tad bit sour.

Suicide

Mental disorders were cruel.

She buried those thoughts at the back of her head and enjoyed her hot chocolate watching the dark moon. She was obsessed with it. Maybe it was the way it  always drew her in, or it could have been the calm it brought to her disrupted sully thoughts but she appreciated It's existence.

Her phone disturbed her peace again not even 10 minutes after George's call. Except this time it was her grandmother. With justified hesitancy. Annabelle reluctantly answered the call.

"You missy!!!, I did not raise you to treat family like that!!. What kind of a person d..."

Annabelle moved the device away from her ear. Her grandmother, angry over the woman's lack of empathy towards George had started the conversation by screaming her ear off. Annabelle waited until her grandmother was done shouting before bringing the phone closer to her but this time she opted to put the phone on speaker for caution.

"Annabelle I raised you better than that. You refused to help family?" She coughed but you could hear the dissapointment in her voice

"Grandma I'm sorry. Its just that I'm not in that department anymore." Dr Annabelle tried to reason with the frustrating old woman. Though her words fell into deaf ears.

"Oh yes, you are now all superior and better than everyone else. I thought you studied psychology to help people not sit in some fancy chair giving orders. Goodnight"

She hated times like this when she made her grandmother upset. The old woman raised Annabelle, maybe not the best childhood for the now grown woman but to an oblivious naive changeling, the old woman had taken the role of her mother and father too in their forever absence

Years back, quite a long time had passed since Annabelle accepted the job wanting nothing more than to help those fighting with something they could not see nor control. That was then, before her heart was tainted.

So much had drastically changed in Annabelle since then. The realization that her occupation came at the expense of her own sanity. Though, her cold heart still carried warmth and ached for those struggling to survive their mental difficulties, Annabelle had experienced the pain of losing patients who were overpowered by their mental conditions leading to their death. She had no desire to experience such intense sorrow again.

Not after she had lost three patients in her line of work over the past year.

Of course, that was the case if she had a choice in the matter. With her grandmother involved, she was aware of how this issue would become bigger. In any case that George's daughter were to commit suicide after Annabelle refused to offer her helping hand, the young girl's death would be ruled as her fault.

They were placing fate into Annabelle's hands and the woman chose to try for the girl. Maybe her expertise would make a difference.

Everyone deserved a chance to be saved.

Knowing if she heard his annoying voice she would back out, Annabelle quickly send a short text to George's unsaved number.

One hour session everyday at 1pm starting tomorrow.

Just great, this meant she was giving up her lunch hour.
