Funny how Y/N landed her dream job not even less than 12 hours ago but all she could sit and think about was Cate. She laid on her parents couch, just thinking about what happened. "Friends... what a terrible word" she thought to herself.
She was going to have to try, though. If she wanted her job or to ever see Cate regularly, this was how she had to do it. She had to figure out how to be just friends with a woman that literally made her head spin. A woman who made her so weak in the knees with only eye contact. A woman she had history with... and wow was it good.
This was going to be interesting to say the least. She just sat there, thinking. Thinking about Cates eyes, her hands, her lips, and the way they curved at the end when she was trying not to laugh at something Y/N said that was cheesy.
God... that woman. She missed her. She missed her so much more than she ever knew and all she wanted was to kiss her. All she wanted was to start up where they left off but she couldn't. It wasn't up to her. Cate needed time... maybe even a lifetime but, she'd wait. She would wait, every damn second, hour, day or year.
She knew in her soul that it was Cate. She knew that Cate was the one she wanted to spend eternity with but she had to wait. I guess if you're thinking of things in that way... what's a few years as opposed to a lifetime? "Just a drop in the bucket" she thought.
When she woke the next morning, she had a text on her phone.
Cate
It was nice to see you, Y/N. Looking forward to working with you... and seeing you more often, not going to lie. I missed seeing you! I missed your presence in my life.
Y/N smiled so much, her cheeks hurt.
Y/N
Loved getting to spend some time with you as well Cate, always have! I missed you immensely, and I can't wait to see more of you, truly.
Y/N put her phone down and spent the rest of her day thinking about that text. She knew Cate wasn't really a texter. So, getting a message from her was nice. She knew Cate really must've enjoyed seeing her if she texted her, which made the message all the more special.
Y/N needed to find a way to cool her heels though, she knew that. Cate made it abundantly clear what she needed and she owed it to her. It's hard changing a dynamic in a relationship, when you are used to a certain thing.
When she was in a relationship with Cate, they were go go go. They were hot and heavy. All though, it felt as if they weren't, they were. They only were in a relationship for a few weeks. They talked of wanting intimacy and letting love grow but if she was honest with herself, their relationship was based off of lust and desire.
Both are great feelings, and matter in life...but it's not the emotion that makes love last. Not the only emotion that makes love last, anyways. She loved Cate but she knew that in order to spend her life with her, she needed to be friends with her first. She needed to know her and more importantly, they needed to trust each other.
How do you develop trust? You follow through. You show them that you are serious and that you will care for their heart. You can hold a heart, sure but if you are not willing to care for a persons heart while it's in your hands, it could be misplaced or even broken.
So, she needed to build trust and the best way to do that was to give it time. Time however, is a bitch. It can tear you apart, limb for limb or it can give you a garden, with everything you've always wanted... and the truth is, you don't know what it will do. You have no choice and no control, it commands.
