Egypt, a land of deserts, dunes, sandstorms, hot weathers' and cold nights. It held a civilisation of whom artists, storytellers, architects and traders would come together from all over the land, and overseas. Its soil was rich, thanks to the famous River of Nil, that greeted them every day and night.
Sadly, under these impressive and tall pyramids, held a dark secret of wars, starvations, and greedy hands. The poor were left to fetch for themselves, watched by the mighty queens and kings, whom sipped from the venomous wines they held with mockery. It was a vicious world of injustice and control. A control so strong, it was feared of what would come to one who opposed the rules, so far as to dare betray their superiors.
And so, the people seeked refuge in their beliefs, their Gods. They believed- brainwashed, some may say- that those heavenly beings would walk above the sand and free them from their miserable lives. More than that, deep down, they knew very well that the Gods couldn't care less, and had already offered them much. To bring back hope that a new era would come soon, temples and religious monuments were created. This would help to remind the sad ones that there was still faith.
People who felt deemed and chosen from God, would represent the voice of their lords. Then, the most beautiful girls were picked to become priestesses, and stay true to their lords until they passed away, where they would join the heavens, known as Aaru.
Among them, in a small town, was a woman whom sang to birds while brushing her hair. At night, she would hum to the Moon, the only one whom knew her truth.
The girl was unhappy.
Born an orphan, she was lucky to have been saved and raised in the luxury of the temple. The temple of the Tiger God 'Roronoa Zoro'. It was said to her that she was brought to the building's front, accompanied with a sacred necklace around her neck. A sign she was protected by the Gods, but more precisely, the Crane God 'Nico Robin'.
Why she was brought to the Tiger God's temple was still a mystery. But what the girl knew was that from that day, she was spoiled rotten. Even the Pharaohs from the nearby kingdoms would come over to receive a blessing.
But the girl never felt such connection with the deities from above the clouds. She was angrily confused. She didn't understand why she was saved. What was so special that differentiated her from others ? She asked, prayed, gave offerings, sang to them, yet they never replied.
She felt enclosed in such a small place. A familiar feeling she felt when she saw the priest's bird. It was a beautiful bluish bird. Some of its tips faded into a bright yellow. It would have looked even more magnificent if it could fly. Sadly, it was trapped in a birdcage. A cage that felt stuffy, suffocating and sad.
Younger, she had set the bird free. She was scolded for such acts, and that night she cried. The bird had visited her, its eyes glowing before taking flight again. The next day, the priest pleaded forgiveness from her, for yelling at her, for fear that he angered the divinities.
"I will forgive you, sir, but only if you swear to never enclose nature's beauty in your selfish hold"
"Ofcourse, I deeply apologize, 'chosen one', forgive this insolent man for making such a treasure like yourself cry the tears of the Nil"
Chosen one.
You've always despised that word. It left a terrible taste on your tongue. It mixed with your saliva and you swallowed it with antipathy. The man was on his knees, his head bowed down with his forehead kissing the ground. This feeling at that moment scared you. To held such power at such a young age, to be praised and looked up for nothing.
It made you feel uncomfortable, and slowly, you had started to hate the reflection you saw. The one that wore the expensive white dresses and the golden jewelry that was crafted skillfully from overseas. Without being conscious of it, you had already become an adult.
Here you were now, giving your hair a last brush, staring at yourself in the mirror. The small mantlepiece in front of you was a mess with earrings, bracelets and your only necklace. Your eyes were slowly healing from the puffy red that surrounds it.
You had cried, again.
A knock at your door lets you know of a guest. You didn't bother to look away from your reflection, as the door slid open and in came one of the other young priestess, doomed in this mansion-cage like you.
"Dear sister, I have arrived to inform you of something...out of this world." She said, her tone was laced with uncertainty or her words.
You halted in your movement, placing the hairbrush down. Turning around, you signed her to come closer. She bent to your side, holding her hands in yours.
"What is it that has you in such a child franzy, tell me, sister." You spoke gently, squeezing her hands reassuringly.
"For as long as we know each other, I have only spoken truth, and truth I shall speak. My words may come of as absurd for a woman of my status and age, but outside, far from this home, we will have guests, guests from another word," She leaned her head onto your lap, her eyes shut "I say, they will come three moons from now, and with them, I say, they will bring something we have waited for."
"Three moons ? Another world ? My sister, have you not slept that your mind lies to you on what is reality and dreams ?"
"Sister, Chosen One, I speak the truth, to lie to you," She lifted her head up, her brown hazel eyes softly staring at your (eye/colour) ones. "Absurd, I say. I do not seek to make myself sound crazy, oh sister, believe what my jumble words tell"
"Who are those you seek to make me believe are no figment of your playful mind ?"
"The Gods."
