The week always seemed to drag on when I had plans for the weekend. Especially when those plans didn't involve being in school when I was supposed to. Wednesday and Thursday quickly became the worst days of the week as I waited for them to end and for Friday to make her entrance. When the sun came through the blinds on Friday morning, I was up faster than I had been. I got right up this morning to make sure I had everything I needed for the day packed. Before I left my room, I quietly peeked out of my door to see if my mom was awake. If she saw me with two bags, my plans would be ruined, and she'd drop me off at school and make sure she got my period attendance for every class.

I couldn't see her or hear any tv or other unsolicited noise from her side of the house, so I snuck out of my room and grabbed my keys off the counter before heading out toward the garage. I managed to get the board in the house without a noise or knocking anything over but just when I thought I made it without being noticed, I remembered the doorbell camera. If Miles pulled up out front, there was no way I was going to be able to hide the giant board. So I called him and had him pull up on the street over so I could walk out the back door and through my neighbor's yard to get there. When I walked up on the truck, he was sitting in the driver's seat with the biggest smile on his face.

"This is the most elaborate skip day plan I've ever seen." He said as he hopped out to help me pull down the tailgate. Once the board was secure we got in the truck. I turned to see Zach in the back seat asleep and looked at Miles with a questioning look. Miles laughed and took off toward the school. Or at least that's what I thought until he drove past it instead of turning in the parking lot. "You completely missed the turn."

"I figure we'd get a head start on our day."

"Even if we don't get period attendance, aren't they still going to call and say we missed?" Miles shook his head 'no' and turned up the radio to drown out my doubts. He disregarded the sleeping teenager in his backseat, leading me to believe that Zach could sleep through a tornado. Miles explained that he wanted to get a start on shopping first so we had enough time to surf when the waves hit their best during the day.

Once the first shop was in sight, Miles pulled into a parking spot and turned off the truck. I was a little confused considering he normally picked a central location but shrugged it off, "Beach Bum?" I read the sign as I unbuckled my seat belt and reached back to shake Zach awake.

Zach looked around confused, "This doesn't look like school to me."

"Miles wanted to leave early," Zach launched his hand at the back of my seat, "Okay... what did I miss?"

"I had a test first period." I looked at Miles who was sharing the same 'oops' look I had on his face as we got out. We met at the front of the truck before walking into the store. The name made sense when I realized it was a tourist centered surf shop. We all separated to different parts of the store and met in the middle. Miles came back with one of those single pearl necklaces that were really popular a few months ago. I argued with him to put it back but instead he went to the counter and bought it. When I was ready to check out, they were standing at the register waiting for me.

On the way-out Miles handed me the necklace, "You literally didn't have to."

"On the contrary, I needed to. It's just so, you." I laughed at him as Zach held the door for us to walk out.

I dug through my bag as I responded, "I feel like being sarcastic all the time really isn't going to help you in life." Once I found the bracelets I was looking for, I handed one to each of them and slid the one for myself on my wrist.

Miles continued on with his sarcasm, "OMG! Are these friendship bracelets?"

"Thank you, Laney." Zach said with a sincere smile. I've probably mentioned this a few times, but it was quickly becoming clear to me who each of them was holding the place for from my old life. Miles was so much like John B, and it stressed me out to know that wherever I ended up there was always a sarcastic brunette surfer boy being sent my way. Zach was my second Pope. Both were quiet at times but understood and listened so well. They both had their moments where I wanted to just smack them upside their head, but that just seemed to be my friendship M.O.

"Can we do breakfast?"

"You at least owe me breakfast." Zach insisted since we were missing more than just 3 classes. Miles agreed but on the condition that they steered clear of his family's restaurant. Something about him not wanting to get in trouble? I stopped listening after he agreed to buy food.

Once we grabbed our breakfast burritos, we got back in the truck and went to the beach. The boys went straight for the water as soon as they pulled on their wet suits while I pulled mine up to my waist and sat on the beach to let my food settle. In the half hour I spent chilling, the surf had gotten even better making me believe I had been getting up super early for average waves when this time of day clearly brought in good ones.

"It's about time." Zach said splashing water toward me as I joined them while they waited.

"Done sunbathing I see." Miles added before I spotted a wave and called it mine.

We went on for a few more hours before we were all laying back on the beach. Maggie and Kayce joined us as Zach and I grew exhausted. It had been a long day and I had been surfing more than they were.

I stood up to pull down my wetsuit and throw my t-shirt, well JJ's t-shirt, over the wet bathing suit I was dying to get out of, "You're leaving so soon?" Kayce asked as I stepped out of the wet suit's bottom half. I nodded and walked toward the parking lot to put my board in the truck with Zach behind me. He pulled down the tailgate to make it easier to put the boards in, "He better not want to stay."

"If he stays, I'm walking home." I climbed up to sit on the tailgate as we waited for Miles to stop talking and make his way to the truck. Eventually he made it to us, swung his board over the side of the truck and turned back with his stupid smirk as he stood with his door open to say, "Let's go losers."
