I turned to Kie and JJ with a smile. A complete 180 from my previous feeling. "You don't have to take your dad's truck." I slid my phone in my pocket and waited for her response.

JJ raised a brow and spoke first, "Why?"

"I asked Dylan, he said we could borrow it." Their faces lit up and Kie did a little happy dance.

15 minutes later we were making our way closer to an actual neighborhood and further away from the trees and marsh.

"You guys go to John B's. I have to grab some stuff. I'll meet you back here in 20 minutes." Kiara took a left while me and JJ turned right toward the street John B and I lived on. JJ and I were quiet as we walked. Granted I brushed him off earlier, the silence was bugging me.

I stopped in the road, "Did I do something wrong?" I looked at him as he continued walking before stopping.

"I was just giving you some space. You seem like you needed it earlier." I nodded and started walking again. We were at John B's by now.

He was stopped at the front of the house when I looked back at him, "What's wrong JJ?"

"Is this weird?" He motioned between the two of us.

I tried to play dumb, "What?"

"What happened when you were here for midsummers," He took off his hat and ran a hand through his hair, "What happened in Charleston. The feelings I have when it's just us together, or how I feel when we're with everyone else and you choose to be far away from me. Even earlier you brushed me off when clearly something was wrong." He started to ramble.

"How was what happened when I was home for midsummers weird?" I needed clarification. We danced around the fire, like we had done a dozen times before. We talked, like we were doing right now. Nothing about Charleston was any different than what we had done in the time I had been home. Of course on my end everything was different. Only reason being was that I had a crush on him. So any attention on me from him made the crush grow. "Or what happened in Charleston?"

"Because things between us are different now."

"And that's weird for you?" We were still standing in front of the house. He hadn't started looking for the wench yet and I still needed to get the truck.

"Its not weird for you?" He held a confused look as he waited for me to answer. I could tell his head was spinning, his feet falling out from underneath of him as the conversation unraveled between us. I reached for his hand and held like we had done so many times in the past two months.

"What's weird to me is how everything can become so twisted in a matter of a half hour walk. Like Jayj, I just want us to be able to be friends without ruining it. But I feel like no matter what we do with this," I motioned between us, "I just don't want to lose you as my friend. Not after going through everything we have together." He took a step closer to me, moving our hands from just sitting in one another's to our fingers intertwining. I watched him look from my lips to my eyes then back to my lips, feeling like something would come out of this conversation.

"What're we doing?" he asked taking a step back, "We shouldn't be doing this." He dropped my hand as he walked away to look for the wench. It was like suddenly, we were pulled back into the reality of our current situation and we both knew that there would always be something in our way.

I let out a breath and nodded, "Yeah."

"It wouldn't work anyway." I could tell JJ was trying to come up with anything to prove that a relationship between us wouldn't work out. "Look at Kie and Pope. I don't think I'd be okay if we stopped being as close because of something like this."
