When the sun peaked through the curtains and into my room, I was up checking my phone. I had no messages from Kie, JJ, or Sarah. I was okay with not hearing from Kie, but nothing from JJ or Sarah worried me because I hadn't spoken to them both in a while. Granted Sarah had no phone, but she still told me she would find a way to call me to let me know she was okay.

With no messages, I got up and walked to the kitchen. My father was in there and I particularly didn't want to talk to him. "Morning." He tried to talk. He hated it when we didn't. "Everything okay?" No dad. I'm still upset that you tell me to do what I think is best and when I try to protect the people I care about, you tell me I'm going too far. And then basically tell Sarah about the crush I had on her boyfriend when I was 13. But nah, everything is just peachy.

I knew he wouldn't let me leave the kitchen without a word in, "Yeah, tired. Have you guys heard anything yet?" I put a bagel in the toaster and moved behind him to make some chocolate milk.

Then I remembered it was only Thursday and he was supposed to be at work, "Why aren't you at work?" My first question going completely out the window the second that one left my mouth.

Dylan joined us now, "Took the day off." Me and my brother shared the same confused look at our dad's answer.

"You took the day off?" Dylan repeated as a question for clarity. Why would he be taking the day off? We were struggling as it was and taking off work was something neither of us expected to hear from him.

I watched my dad shake his head and kind of brush us off, "I had stuff to take care of at the bank today and then a doctor's appointment. It just made more sense to take off than request time off."

And the surprises kept on rolling in. "A doctor's appointment?" He never goes to the doctors willingly. Not even if he was sick as a dog.

"It was just a check up, nothing too serious." It was obvious we weren't going to get any real answers. When the bagel popped up out of the toaster, I put the cream cheese on it and sat next to Dylan at the counter. We were all relatively silent, but then I heard it.

The car horn was faint, but I could recognize the familiar sound anywhere.

"It's John B!" I yelled as I got up and ran to the front door. I flung it open and there he was leaning against the infamous twinkie. His smile said enough for me as he bent down to greet Cooper who had darted out of the screen door as soon as it opened. I wasn't too far behind him. "Oh my god!" I yelled as I wrapped him in a hug.

He whispered, "Hey Lou." As he squeezed me tighter.

"What? How are you here right now?" I was shocked to see him standing in front of me considering it was only yesterday morning that he was facing the death penalty.

"They dropped the charges!" He was so happy, and I could see the relief on his face as we let go of each other. I took a step back and looked over him, my eyes going straight to the bruises on his neck. I didn't get a chance to ask what happened before my dad invited him in for some breakfast. He allowed me to walk in first. We only spent a few minutes at my house before planning to go back to his. I got dressed while he ate.

"I'm glad you're out. Things were definitely different without you." I laughed thinking about how things went haywire without him around. It had barely been 3 days and everyone was losing their minds. It made me wonder how everyone had got along without him when they all thought he was gone for real.

"Yeah, JJ tried to break me out of the clink."

"Are you serious?" I wasn't surprise that he chose to go with that plan, but I was a little worried seeing as John B got out on his own and there had been no word from JJ since early yesterday.
