"There she is."

I stood up along with everyone else as we waited for Sarah to pull up the boat. John B was there to help her off. She looked sad and disappointed. Things must've not gone the way she wanted them to. But at the same time, they were the only two emotions anyone ever felt after talking to Ward, so I wasn't really surprised.

Kiara stood with a smile waiting for her and said, "Sarah!" in the sweetest voice. She was happy to see her back with us. I jogged over to help JJ anchor the boat. We did so without speaking and hurried back to the others.

Sarah began to explain, "You guys were right. It didn't work." She admitted causing me to let out a sigh. My skepticism for the idea reigning true.

"Well, that settles it guys." JJ started as he began to fidget with his fingers. He would take his thumb and move it across each individual finger on his right hand before moving to his left hand and doing the same thing. Cracking each finger as he went. "Y'all need to load up in the paddy wagon and get the hell out of Dodge, right now." Honestly, he was kind of right. All hell was about to break loose, and no one knew when shit was going to hit the fan.

Pope started talking about everything they'd need. How much gas it would take to get to a certain spot. "You'd have to leave as soon as possible." As he spoke my eyes moved to the water where several sheriff boats were heading our way.

"I think it's too late." Everyone turned their heads to me then out to where I was looking. The boats growing larger as they approached the shore.

"They followed you here?" John B turned and asked Sarah, "It must've been your father." I looked to JJ as he dug around in his bag for something. My attention moved from him to Pope as he began to push me toward the woods. We ran from the beach, through the woods and into a small water way. Sarah had been struggling to keep up because of her injury and it was slowing John B down. By the time we were neck deep in the water, it was too late.

Sheriffs were closing in and it was time to surrender.

"We're trapped. There's no way we're getting out of here." JJ said as he went back in his book bag and grabbing a soaked bandana. I watched him squeeze the water out of it before reaching back in and pulling out a gun. He attempted to dry off the clip as I watched him with my jaw dropped.

"What the hell are you doing?" John B looked over at JJ as I spoke. No one had been paying attention to him this whole time and now finally, someone else was. I knew what would happen if JJ did the stupid thing he was thinking about doing, I was just hoping John B figured it out too. I watched JJ cock the gun and start to step out from behind the tree. The only thing I could do was cover my mouth. The shock wouldn't let me move a muscle. I was hoping John B did the right thing.

Before JJ moved from being fully behind the tree, John B pulled him back and took the gun. I let out a sigh of relief when the gun was dropped on the ground. We watched him kick dirt over it.

"It's gonna be alright." John B reassured JJ as cops surrounded us on all sides. I had never felt so defenseless in my life. John B stood with his hands up as he looked back over to all of us. No one said a word as he took a step into the clearing. Instead, we followed behind him with our hands up too.

"I'm surrendering." John B yelled, his comment allowing a few deputies to move in on him.

"The rest of y'all stay right where you are. Keep your hands where I can see them." Shoupe yelled over to us as we stood away from the tree. I could tell that he was a little surprised to see me back with my friends. I guess the news hadn't traveled back to Uncle Vic that I had abandoned his dear sister for the 'low-life'.
