I sat in the living room with my family, responding to some unanswered DM's and texts, when my father yelling brought me back to reality. I looked up seeing another touchdown had been scored, meaning my father's team was losing.
"Son, you paying attention? Watching these games can help you prepare for the upcoming season. My boy 19 and already better than some of the pros, getting ready to give them college boys hell." He said, starting to talk to himself.
You see my father was a football fanatic, always has been. His story isn't one you haven't heard before, star in college but an injury kept him from making it to the league.
The injury was probably the best thing that ever happened to him, but of course he doesn't see it that way. Shortly after he met my mom and they had Shilo, then 8 years later me, and then 4 years after that my little sister Shelomi. He'd always tried to get Shilo into football, but it just wasn't for him, and it put a lot of strain on their father-son relationship.
He hardly paid attention to him once I was born. He'd been raising me to be a football star since I could walk, luckily I actually did have my own love for the sport.
"Pilar, you seeing this?!" he yelled again as his team fumbled the ball. I glanced over at my mother who looked unamused.
"Come on pretty girl, let's go pick your first day outfit." My mom said to Shelomi, who happily followed her up the stairs, leaving me with my father.
I was happy when the game ended, going to do a walkthrough of the house before I left. We've always been well off in life, mainly because my mom's a doctor. She was the reason I had a car, why I was able to get an off-campus apartment with my friends, she was my Ms. Make It Happen.
Her and my sister would probably be the main reasons I come visit home, not like my school was very far anyway.
I went and said my goodbyes before sliding on my 'University of Colorado' hoodie and going to get in my car.
All I had to focus on was football and having fun.

I drowned out the sound of my younger siblings arguing, focusing on making sure I had my lesson plans for the upcoming semester finalized.
"Little Ms. Genius over there not even paying attention." I heard my sister, Lauryn, say, making me look up at them.
"Leave my baby alone, she tryna finish her work." My mama said, prompting the baby of the family, my brother Austin to come and sit by me.
"Damn I wish I was in your class, easy A." he said making me give him a side eye, "Not how that goes sir."
"Whatever you know you'd pass me, you know I got football to worry about" He said waving me off.
"You got them grades to worry bout too Austin, don't play!" my mama yelled from the kitchen making me chuckle.
He had gotten a football scholarship the University of Colorado, which just so happened to be where I worked at. This was going to be my second year as a Biochemistry professor, and I really loved what I did.
I glanced over at the wall seeing my diploma and degrees decorating my mother's wall. I really was somewhat of a genius. I'd graduated High school at 16 with my diploma and an associate degree, by 18 I had my bachelor's, master's by 20, and I got my PHD in biochemistry at 25, and now I'm a professor at 27. I've done well for myself to say the least.
"Anybody talked to dad?" I asked making my mother and sister roll their eyes at me, "Don't bring that man up in my house Eden." My mama said making me sigh.
My father had cheated on my mother with Ms. Gwendolyn from our church years ago, leading to a messy divorce between the two. It seemed like the more their relationship thrived the more bitter my mother got, and it didn't help that Gwen was closer to my age than theirs. I can understand everyone being upset at his decisions, but he'd always been a good father no matter what. I just wish he and my mom could be in the same room without going at one another's neck.
Once it started to get late I headed back to my house, greeted by my dog Bruno. He was the cutest little chocolate lab on Earth.
"Come on Bru, let's go get ready for bed, we got work this week." I said, petting him before heading to my room, the sound of his footsteps behind me.
I had a feeling this year would be good to me.
Omniscient POV
Shedeur and Eden started their mornings off extremely differently.
One on time, organized, and enthusiastic about the day.
The other hungover, extremely late, yet in no rush taking his time to put himself together for his second class of the first day. Besides since he was on the football team, he was sure class and homework would be the least of his worries.
Eden started lecturing on time, about 20 minutes later noticing a student enter and take an empty seat closer to the back of the classroom. Students like that always peaked her interest, making her wonder how the semester would go for them. The class had lecture on Mondays & Wednesdays, with lab on Fridays so there was always plenty of room to succeed.
Since it was early in the semester, once the weekend arrived Eden headed to a local restaurant to eat dinner with her siblings. They all would soon be too busy to share these small bonding moments with one another.
Meanwhile after practice Shedeur was pre-gaming for yet another party with friends Drew and Karim.
Despite such different lifestyles, neither had any idea that their paths were destined to cross.
