1827, Edinburgh, Scotland
In the year 1827, Edinburgh, Scotland, the city was known for its historical and intellectual significance. But on this particular night, the streets of Edinburgh held secrets that few dared to venture into: the city's dark underbelly.
Crowley and Aziraphale, who had taken on human forms to blend in with the times, had ventured to Edinburgh for reasons known only to them. They roamed the city, their angelic and demonic natures concealed beneath the guise of ordinary travellers. Their wanderings led them to a quiet cemetery on the city's outskirts, where ancient tombstones and moss-covered statues stood sentinel over the resting souls of the departed. As they walked through the cemetery under the pale moonlight, their celestial senses tingled with an unusual presence: a statue of the archangel Gabriel, standing tall amidst the gravestones.
Crowley couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the sight of the statue. "Well, isn't that a bit presumptuous?"
Aziraphale, his celestial aura shimmering with amusement, replied, "The likeness is uncanny."
As they approached the statue, they were met with an unexpected sight. Two young women, clad in tattered clothing and with dirt-smudged faces, were in the midst of a rather macabre activity, grave robbing. Elspeth and Y/N, two poor Scottish lasses, had turned to the grim trade of grave robbery as a means of survival in a harsh world.
But the surprise was mutual. Crowley and Aziraphale exchanged knowing glances, their celestial instincts recognizing Y/N from their previous encounters. Y/N's eyes widened in surprise as she recognized the two figures approaching, "Crowley! Fancy seeing you here!"
Crowley grinned, his ineffable charm still very much intact. "Well, well, well. Y/N, my dear, you do seem to have a knack for appearing in unexpected places."
Their reunion was marked by warmth and familiarity, and it wasn't long before Y/N and Crowley resumed their romantic relationship, their affection for each other evident in their smiles and stolen glances.
Their conversation was interrupted when Elspeth, who had been diligently digging, uncovered a fresh grave. In their line of work, a new body was a valuable commodity, and the pair had a plan to make the most of their discovery.
Elspeth, interrupted with a practical suggestion. "We should take this one to Mr. Dalrymple. He pays well for bodies."
Aziraphale, ever the moral guardian, voiced his disapproval. "I can't condone such activities, especially involving the desecration of the deceased."
Nevertheless, the group decided to take the body to Mr. Dalrymple, a surgeon who used the bodies for anatomical studies. Crowley, with his penchant for mischief, was all too willing to help. Aziraphale, however, was determined to voice his dissent.
"I'm not sure we should be assisting in this endeavor, Crowley."
Crowley rolled his eyes, clearly unfazed by Aziraphale's concerns. "It's all in the name of science, angel."
.......
As they arrived at Mr. Dalrymple's residence with the stolen body, Aziraphale's unease grew. He couldn't condone this act, and in a moment of defiance, he turned the stolen body into a revolting, rotten liquid goo, rendering it utterly useless for any anatomical study.
Mr. Dalrymple was furious, and the group left his residence in haste. Y/N and Elspeth returned to their meager lodgings, empty-handed and frustrated. There, they introduced Crowley and Aziraphale to their friend, Wee Morag, who had joined their precarious profession. The three women were united by their dire circumstances, relying on each other for support in the unforgiving world they navigated. As they discussed their plans for the future, the topic inevitably turned to their next attempt at securing a body. The need for money, for survival, hung heavily in the air.
