Prologue

"Oh come on Z, move on!" Jessica begged me for the thousand time this weekend. "You know I can't and I won't." I said. My real name is Zaffina. It's just too much of a mouthful for most people so they call me Z for short. My parents named me after their favorite character in "The Werewolf Hunters", which is also their favorite series. Go figure. But that's beside the point. The point is I'm in love, not puppy dog love actual true love. Jessica can't stand him. She says he's some stuck up jerk and completely stupid guy who thinks everything's about him. Well she isn't exactly wrong but there's more to him than that. I would know. He's also a good friend of mine just not as good of a friend as Jessica is.

Jessica has everything going for her. She's tall at least 5' 10", long blonde hair, high cheekbones, turquoise eyes, and everything a supermodel could want, except she wants to be a brain surgeon, not exactly glamorous. Jessica has her own style meaning the more it doesn't match the better, me on the other hand I want wear anything unless it matches. We're complete opposites.

Okay well back to him. His name is Jared Passtech. He's the star quarterback. He is probably 6' 2" at the shortest, green eyes that could kill, dark brown hair that's all spiked up, and like some golden skin color. I promise you he makes everyone take a second glance. You think is this real or am I imagining things? Also his voice, oh his voice, it's like an angel it's not too deep and not too high. It sounds like velvet. What sucks is he's got a girlfriend, and her name is Sarah. She's this brainless cheerleader who thinks 2+2=5 and she's just using him to get more popular.

"Z? Z!" Jessica practically yelled. "Huh? Oh what?" I said confused. "Quit daydreaming about him I asked where are we going? I'm starving!" She said. "Umm we can go to the Cornerstone but can you take me to the Book Nook? I need to get some money from my mom and dad for dinner and I'm in dire need of some books. I said. "Find but you owe me and since I'm driving you here you're paying for dinner. Jessica said. "Whatever." I muttered. Jessica just got her drivers license last month and she insisted since I only have my permit still I owe her money for wherever she takes me. I'm taking my test this week but it won't matter. I don't have a car to drive. The problem is because I only get paid minimum wage since my parents own the place and want me to become more "equipped for life".

My parents own the Book Nook and since its the only bookstore within 50 miles of another we get pretty good business. The bonus is I get books 50% off since I'm an employee. Here's the thing though my parents are never home considering my parents and myself are the only employees for the place. I'm free to go and do whatever I want, not that it matters though the only crazy or exciting things I do involve Jessica making me tag along on her outlandish adventures. Unlike her I'm not exactly wild or do things that have no importance. Don't I sound exciting?

Jessica pulled into the Book Nook parking lot. I slowly crawled out of the car while trying to put my jean jacket on and put my cell phone in my purse. As soon as my parents heard the bell sounding someone was in the store they ran out, and when they saw me they started bombarding me with questions like "how was your day?!" Or "do you want a drink?" Finally I yelled at them to stop. " I just came in because I need money and a few books." I practically screamed. I grabbed the books I needed and they rung me up and gave me $20. Then they went into the back of the store again.

I started looking through the books again because I knew Jessica wouldn't be expecting me for at least another ten more minutes. Let's just say I tend to take my time in any bookstore. Then someone said "hey" to me. I turned around and saw him. Jared was in my bookstore! He gave me this funny, confused sort of look and then I realized he was waiting for a reply. "Hi. What are you doing here?" I asked. "Well my girlfriend needed a book so I came and picked it up for her." He replied. "Wait, Sarah can read?" I sarcastically commented. "Funny. Can you quit acting so jealous though?" Jared said. "Jealous? Jared, I have better things to do than talk about your dumb girlfriend, and besides she's only dating you to get more popular and you know it." I said. "You know your personality sucks sometimes." He replied dryly. "Hey thanks." I replied with a smile. "As a matter of a fact so does your appearance." Jared replied with a smile. Okay that hurt. A lot. Although I was smart enough not to let it show. "Well your girlfriend has the same problems as me but your still dating her, right?" I said rather smugly. As soon as I said that he put the book back on the shelf and started walking away. "Thanks for shopping at the Book Nook. Come again!" I sort of yelled with a smile a little too big. He walked out saying something that started with a "b" but honestly I didn't care.

And that was the last time I saw him. Alive.
