Chapter Forty-One

Brayden's POV

Do You?

December 5

"Heather's not here," Isabelle said, rudely, when I knocked on Heather's door and it was her roommate who opened it.

"Do you know where she is?" I asked, keeping my cool.

"Do you think I'd tell you?" she questioned, coldly.

"Why are you being such a bitch?"

"I think it's more the other way around. I'm not going to tell you where Heather is, because I can tell she's still mad at you. I can believe it: I mean, if someone kept standing me up, or making promises that he or she never end up keeping, I would hate him or her, too."

"Great," I said, bitterly, once she was done speaking. "Anything else you'd like to add to make me feel even worse?"

"I hope you go to hell."

"Cool, I guess I'll see you down there."

"You're pathetic, Brayden. I'll have you know that every time you ask me about her whereabouts, I won't tell you where she is, because I feel like all you ever do is drag her down.

"You want to know something? I can hear her crying at night sometimes. It hurts me. I don't know what's wrong with her, and she won't tell me. She acts like nothing's going on, but I don't believe her. She's quieter, she's sadder, and sometimes when I talk to her, she trails off and looks into the distance."

"Has she been taking any of her meds?" I asked.

Isabelle frowned. "Meds?"

"Wait..." Isabelle doesn't know Heather's on medication right now? "Has she ever told you what happened during Thanksgiving break?"

"I thought she only hung out with you?" she said, confusion coloring her face.

My blood chilled when I realized that Heather wasn't taking any of her antidepressants. Oh my god, what if she's out there hurting herself? I thought. I started to panic. Before I knew it, I was running down the stairs towards the exit. My problem, though, was finding where Heather might be.

"Hey, where are you going?" I heard Isabelle demand, running after me.

Ugh, fuck off, I silently snarled.

"Seeing as how you won't tell me where Heather is, I'm going to find her myself."

"Why are you in such a hurry?" When I didn't answer her, she said, "Brayden, you're scaring me."

"Where did Heather tell you she went?" I said, spinning around to face her. She crashed into me, and I had to catch her before she doubled over.

"She's getting breakfast."

"Where? I really need to know, Isabelle," I barked. "This is a life or death situation here!" 'Most people who battle depression end up taking their own lives...' I tried to rip Dr. Joel's words from my mind, but it wasn't working.

"She's at Safeway!" Isabelle said. "And what do you mean by 'life or death situation'?"

I didn't bother to answer her before I practically sprinted down the road towards Safeway. Fortunately, I didn't need to go far before I saw her.

She was chilling under a tree in the Quad. I immediately stopped running and let out a relieved sigh. I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my chest.
