Chapter Forty-Six
Brayden's POV
Of Entertainment
December 9
When the doctor came in to check on Heather, I was asked to leave the room. I don't know how long I stood outside of her room, but when the doctor came out to see me, I found it difficult to move my legs.
"She's good to go, but please take her out to eat when she goes—she's a little underweight," the doctor told me, worriedly.
"How underweight?" I asked.
"By around ten pounds. Fortunately, she can easily gain the weight back if she starts eating habitually again." Lowering his voice so that only I could hear, the doctor said, "I did see on her medical records that she's struggling with an eating disorder. Do make sure she's eating regularly."
"I understand."
The doctor patted me on the back and smiled. "Good. Make sure she remembers to come back here in a week so we can check and make sure that the blood transfusion isn't causing her any problems."
"Okay." Once the doctor was gone, I reentered Heather's room.
"You can go now," Heather said, clambering out of her bed. "The doctor says I'm fine."
"But you're not," I murmured, when she tripped over her own feet. I caught her before she could fall.
"I thought you were mad at me."
"No, I was just upset. I'm sorry." I watched as she stooped down to put her shoes on. "Where do you want to eat?"
"I'm not hungry," she said.
"Bullshit. I'm not taking you back until you tell me a place to eat," I replied, tenaciously.
"I'm really not hungry," she tried again.
"Why are you being so stubborn?"
"Fine, take me to a Chinese restaurant," she said, throwing her hands up in defeat. "Happy now?"
"Not until I see you physically eating," I answered. I had the urge to reach over and grab her hand, feel her fingers locked between mine, but I was unsure if she would want me to do that. She was still so upset, but even then, there was no denying the fact that she loved me. I could see it in her eyes and the way she looked at me. She didn't even need to say it.
Then why won't you say it? My inner voice huffed.
I don't know; I honestly don't know. But I just broke up with Berkeley a little less than a week ago, and I'm scared that if I told Heather I loved her, and we started dating and Berkeley found out, then I'm not sure what Berkeley would do. I'm positive Berkeley had verbally attacked Heather before while we were still dating. That would explain why Heather hates Berkeley so much.
As much as I wanted to ask Heather what went down between her and Berkeley, I was afraid. I knew it would only make Heather upset, and I don't want to see her like that anymore. I want to see her happy for once. I haven't seen her genuinely crack a smile since we first started college together.
Outside of the hospital, we found a Chinese restaurant a few blocks down. An Asian woman greeted us when we entered, and she led us to an open seat at the corner of the room. I slid into the same booth Heather was sitting on. I was surprised to see the amount of people in here: the place was packed. A few minutes later, a young waitress came over to take our orders.
