"100% Pure Love", Years & Years
"Yeah, don't look at me with these sad puppy eyes, Mister DJ. Alright, you can pick the piece of paper," James said with a sigh, giving the Saturday Night Challenge jar to Lucas. The young man shuffled and pulled a winner victoriously. "Okay. Why not. But I'll need backup for this one. My queen, would you do me the honor?" James bowed in my direction.
I chuckled. "Always."
We sang, on stage, on the dancefloor, and at some point on a few tables. When we finished, I was sweaty but happy. I reached for the bar to catch my usual refreshing post-gig cocktail when I saw Lucas and Anna on the other side of the counter. I could not hear what they were saying, but they were clearly arguing.
I came closer. "Is everything okay here?"
They turned towards me, trying to smile, but their faces were strained. "Everything's fine," said Lucas.
Anna winced. "No, it's not."
Lucas threw his hands in the air. "And you're doing it again. You don't listen to what I'm saying."
"I listen. You're just not honest with yourself."
"Stop acting as if you knew better than I do. You are what you are, but you are barely older than I am. You're not Elise, for God's sake."
"Alright," I said. "As I am named here, I feel authorized to intervene. Can you tell me what this is about? Because as you have just suggested, I am ancient and wise, and I know better. Except when I really do not. But we will keep that aside for now."
The corner of Lucas' lips twitched a little but the smile did not fully take.
"I just want you to live a normal life," Anna said.
"Normal? How can you say that? What is normal, anyway? You of all people should know it doesn't mean anything."
"Okay, it's not what I meant. I mean, I want you to be happy."
"I know that. But this is the world I live in. I cannot deny it. I just... I don't know. I don't want what I used to want when I was younger. Is that so hard to believe?"
"Anna, sweetheart," I said calmly. "It seems like Lucas has accepted that you have changed but that you have a hard time accepting he can change too."
A look of betrayal. "Whose side are you on?"
"It is not a question of taking side."
She shook her head. "I need some air."
"Anna," I said, but she rushed to the backdoor of the club.
"I need to go back to my set," whispered Lucas.
I hugged him and let him go.
James leaned on the counter of the bar beside me, followed by Aidan. "What's the fuss about?"
"Anna is worried about her brother, and it is understandable, but she does not realize he grew up and he has to make his own decisions."
"I see," James said. "I'm going to talk to her."
Aidan looked at him and raised an eyebrow.
"What? I can do that. Helping others. Being a sympathetic ear. We're buddies, Anna and me."
"Thank you, sweetie," I smiled.
"See? Elise, she believes in me. Shame on you. Shame on you, A," James said, turning around to join Anna in the alley behind the club.
Aidan rolled his eyes and I wrapped my arms around him.
"I believe in him," he whispered, annoyed.
"I know, my love," I whispered back with a smile.
