"In Cythera", Killing Joke
Lucas was feeling well. He was still under the effect of Aidan's blood. It would not last very long because the thirst was particularly strong during the first days of a vampire's life but, for the moment, Lucas was high. Aidan and James encouraged him to tell them about the sensations and feelings he was experiencing, to be able to understand them better, not to be afraid or ashamed of them, and to take ownership of his new life.
They explained to him what would be the withdrawal symptoms. He would have to get used to animal blood. It would be a difficult few days, but Lucas had drank from a person only once. The detoxification process would have been worse and worse if the new vampire had kept on drinking from humans.
Lucas asked Aidan and James how they had been through this. They did not want to frighten him with too many details at this stage but they told him honestly how much the process had been long and difficult.
"It's never going to go completely away, isn't it?" Lucas asked.
"Not completely, no," Aidan said. "There will always be a risk, for instance, if you are in a fragile mental state for any reason. But you're starting with the best of chances, because you will begin immediately to drink animal blood and because you will be accompanied in the process."
Lucas nodded, his eyes still dazed with the power of the blood in his system. Aidan let him rest for a moment and grabbed a drink at the bar. He sat beside me.
"You are so great with him, my love," I said.
He smiled sadly.
"I mean it. He trusts you. And you did not let him down."
He looked at me, startled. "I..." He trailed off.
"He is lucky to have you as his sire. I know you love him and you will guide him and care for him."
"You really think I am up to the task?"
I touched his shoulder with my head and kissed his hand. "I am absolutely certain of it. Trust me."
And then we heard some noise coming from the entrance: enthusiastic exclamations from Anna, and definitely less enthusiastic exclamations from Sonia.
The magician appeared behind the invisible barrier, took off her sunglasses, and glared at me.
"Sonia, thank you so much for coming," I said with a smile.
She did not answer, turned her head towards Lucas who had stood up, and scowled at him. "You. We're going to have a discussion later, you and me."
The young vampire's face was red and he lowered his head.
Nobody dared to talk so I did. "Do you think you can help us with the spell?"
She rolled her eyes, lit a cigarette, and mumbled something I did not understand.
"Sorry?"
She put the cigarette out of her mouth. "I said get away from the walls."
Everyone, me included, stepped back in a reflex as if controlled by a beehive collective mind. Then Sonia gave her purse to Amaury who kept it awkwardly in his arms and started with the spell. A few minutes later, the magic threads of light faded and she grabbed briskly her purse back from Amaury's arms.
"You," Sonia said to Aidan. "Come here."
And, just like that, my vampire crossed the threshold that had kept us inside for almost a day.
"Oh my god, Sonia, you're a genius!" Anna screamed.
"Thank you so much, Sonia," I added.
She shook her head, glanced a last glare at Lucas, and turned her heels towards the exit. "If you talk to Carlos: you haven't seen me and you have no idea where I am," she said while walking.
I could have answered that I indeed would not know where she would be but I chose to abstain. And before I knew it, I had James and Amaury around me, hugging me, while Anna ran into Lucas' arms.
