"Make Believe", Shallou
Ikshan sent some pieces of information to Anna and called us back to explain the spell to us. We needed more supplies and Anna left the club again to get them.
I worked with Lucas on his focus and his calm. We sat together in the middle of the room and I guided his mind to make him more aware of his environment. I showed him the energy in the room and I called Aidan to practice with us. The idea was also for Lucas to understand how he could receive someone else's energy and how to use it. It was not magic per se, and there was no risk it would upset the situation more. But Lucas had never done that before, and we had to prepare as much as we could.
"Let's take a break," Aidan said, after a while.
"I can keep on a little bit," Lucas whispered, his voice strained.
I lifted my head and saw the sweat on Lucas' forehead and the intense concentration on his face. "No, Aidan is right. You need to rest for a minute."
"Maybe we could eat something," offered my vampire. He did not wait for an answer and stood up. He looked for food in the storage room fridge as if on a mission.
"You did great, Lucas," I said.
The young magician smiled and sat at the bar. He rested his head on his arms, folded on the counter. I let him get some rest.
"Do you want something?" I asked Stanislas.
"A drink, maybe?" he said, without a look.
I turned around to find something for him, and he spoke again. "Aidan's lucky to have you."
I froze for a second, trying to decide how I wanted to answer that. I chose to turn back and face the vampire, looking him in the eyes. "I am lucky to have him in my life."
Stanislas narrowed his eyes. I waited.
"You know his past? Everything he did?" He continued, half provocatory, half desperate.
"I know."
"And that's it? You sing to him like in a fucking Disney movie, with birds and squirrels?"
"I love him."
"So do I," he shot back, clenching his fists on the table.
"Do you?"
"You think I'm incapable, right?" He snarled.
"I never said that."
"You blame me."
"I never said that either."
He scrutinized me, looking for an explanation on my face. He seemed to fail to find one and to give up. "Leave me alone."
"As you wish."
There was so much more to say, though. But Stanislas was not ready yet and all this was already a start. One step at a time.
I joined Aidan in the storage room and helped him prepare a snack for Lucas. "Do you want something?" He asked.
"I thought you did not know how to cook," I said with a smile.
"A snack, I can manage." Then after a pause. "Are you laughing at me?"
"I am not." I kept on smiling.
"Right. Since you are laughing at me, no snack for you."
I fluttered my eyelashes and did my best puppy dog eyes. He chuckled. "Okay, no, you win. I can't resist that. Go sit with Lucas, I'll prepare you something."
I kissed his temple, he waved in mock annoyance, and I joined Lucas in the main room. When Aidan brought us the food he had lovingly prepared, Lucas and I ate in silence. But the young magician's face relaxed and he enjoyed the moment.
