"Burning Hour", Jadu Heart
Anna was banging at the invisible barrier, while James and Amaury tried to hold her back. The room resonated with her screams.
"He is conscious," I told her, trying my best to keep my voice even and not betray my fear.
Lucas struggled to breathe as he kept on bleeding. Aidan did not hesitate. He bit his wrist and placed it above Lucas' head. The boy was confused and scared, and he turned his head as a reflex, so I stroked his hair to reassure him. "Aidan's blood can heal you, baby. Do not worry. You just have to drink. Do not fight it."
Lucas' eyes, filled with tears, locked on Aidan's. He understood and tried to keep still. My vampire gave Lucas a small quantity of his blood. "That's it. It's going to be okay," he said, gently.
Lucas' breathing got calmer and the bleeding appeared to have stopped.
"Is he okay, Boss? Please, I can't see him. Tell me what's going on," Anna said, her voice breaking. James' arm around her shoulder kept her steady and she leaned on him. Amaury was holding her hand.
"He seems to be better, honey. Aidan gave him some blood."
Lucas tried to sit up and Aidan helped him. "Take it slow, Lucas. How are you feeling?" My vampire asked.
The boy coughed and finally managed to talk. "Better, I think. I woke up and I felt this pain all over my body. I... I didn't do anything, Elise. I promise. I didn't."
"I know, sweetheart. Calm down. It is not your fault. It is most certainly because of the spell you cast earlier. Your body went through a lot."
Lucas nodded, sobbing. "The blood... I couldn't breathe. I... I was so scared."
Aidan hugged him. "I know. It's okay now. We're here, El and I. You're not alone. It's over."
I exchanged a look with my vampire over Lucas' shoulder and saw on his face the same hope as mine felt that these words were true.
After a few minutes, we helped Lucas to stand up and he walked immediately towards his sister to reassure her.
"Don't ever do that to me again," she said, crying. "When I saw you like that, I..."
"I know. But Aidan's blood healed me. I feel so much better. Don't worry, okay?"
I grabbed Aidan's arm and led him to another corner of the room. "If it was the consequence of the spell," I said, "it means his body did not bear the strength of the magic that went through him."
Aidan closed his eyes for a second. He understood what I had not said yet. "You think my blood won't be enough," he whispered, glancing worriedly at the siblings on the other side.
"That is what I fear. Your blood can help superficially with the wounds caused by the magic. But it cannot get rid of the source of the problem. His condition will probably deteriorate again."
"At least, we saved some time."
"Yes. Thank you for your help."
"Stanislas is older than I am. Maybe his blood..."
I could not believe Aidan thought without hesitation about asking Stanislas for help. His love for Lucas was overcoming all his reluctance towards his sire. But I shook my head before he finished his sentence. "No, this is not the issue. We would need something else than vampire blood."
"You mean magic?"
I sighed. "Maybe. I do not even know. We have to call Sonia again. Prepare for the worst-case scenario."
Aidan leaned over until our heads touched. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
"The kid is going to be okay, my love," Aidan said. "If he's not healed yet, we're going to find a solution. I know we are."
I nodded. "I love you."
"I love you too."
