"Morning Glory", Oasis
I looked around: the anomalies were closing slowly. "You are doing great, sweetie. Hang on."
Lucas' whole body braced. His eyes were tightly shut and he was shaking more and more. "Elise.... I... can't," he panted. "It's too strong... help."
My stomach knotted. I tried to keep my grip on what was happening but it was a lot. I managed to keep a reassuring tone. "It is working. I am here. Lean on me."
Some threads of lights started to become unstable. It seemed like the whole room was moving around us. I looked at Aidan and I saw the panic in his eyes.
I scooted closer to Lucas trying to offer him as much support as I could. He leaned back on me, trembling and tensed.
"I can't....It hurts." Lucas' tears rolled down his face and fell on my arms. He was wrapped up in the spell. He could not let go now, it would consume him.
"Hang on, baby," I said. I put all my energy into framing Lucas' mental space to help him focus and to protect him. I could not talk anymore. I felt like the walls were crumbling around me and I knew that Lucas felt it too. But he did not give up.
"I am here too, Lucas," said Aidan. "Focus on my voice. Open your eyes. Look around. The anomalies are closing. You are doing that. I am so proud of you. You can finish this."
Something clicked in Lucas' mind. I could feel it. The blurred lines became clearer. The light was brighter. Everything stopped moving. And the anomalies disappeared.
It seemed like all the air in the room was sucked in a vacuum. And Lucas crumbled into my arms, unconscious.
"Lucas," Anna screamed. She tried to come in but the invisible wall was still in place. I could not feel the constant buzzing in my ears any longer, though. The spell was stable. Lucas had succeeded.
I checked on his pulse and his breathing. "He is alive, Anna. He is just unconscious."
"He did it, right? It worked?"
"Yes."
She slid on the floor and sobbed, the built-up tension and fear flowing out of her finally.
I tried to stand up to take care of Lucas but my legs were wobbling beneath me.
Aidan took Lucas in his arms and laid him gently in a booth. I felt a hand on my arm and turned my head. Stanislas was offering to help me stand up. "Are you alright, pet?"
I stumbled and leaned on him. "I will be fine. Thank you."
"The kid?"
"I hope so. It was a lot to handle."
Ten minutes later, Lucas opened his eyes and tried to sit up in a panic.
"Sshhh, Lucas, it is alright. It is over," I said.
"I... I did it?"
"Yes, you did it," Aidan said with a smile. "How are you feeling?"
"Dizzy, but okay." He hesitated. "I did it? Really?"
"Yes."
Lucas burst into tears and Aidan sat beside him, pulling him into his arms. He cried against his chest, while Aidan stroked his hair to try to soothe him. "What you did was amazing, Lucas. You saved everyone. I am so proud of you."
