"Hope We Meet Again", Laura Marling
"The invisible wall is collateral damage but it is a useful one. The original spell mutated this way and it helps contain the magic. If you take it down, it will be uncontrollable," Ikshan explained on the screen of my phone.
"Alright. So we should concentrate on stabilizing the energy."
"Yes. Someone inside the club has to do the spell."
"Is it possible to give you some objects through the barrier?" Leno asked.
"It is. We already did it."
"Then," Zoé said, "you just have to chant the b.s. Ikshan found and voilà. Problem solved. It's a question of energy, right? Lucas can do the spell and, between one uber-immortal and two old fangy-dudes, it should be enough to succeed, no?"
Ikshan and Anna shook their head at the same time, but the young immortal spoke first. "No, they will have the amount of energy but Lucas will be the conduit. And we have no idea how he will react to that much power or if he can control it enough for it not to backlash."
"Could we train Lucas in any way?" Leno offered.
"We could, but not here and not in a few hours."
"Please, stop talking about me as if I were not there," Lucas said in a small voice.
Anna winced. "We are here because of your recklessness and you do not approve of our method to deal with the problem you caused?"
Lucas' eyes filled with tears. Anna's anger wavered immediately. Her lower lip quivered and she stepped back out of our sight, followed by James. Lucas leaned tentatively towards Aidan as if to verify first if he would not push him away or yell at him too. As he didn't, Lucas stayed close to my vampire, who wrapped an arm around his shaky shoulders.
I ended the call with Ikshan, Zoé and Leno.
"We cannot train you, Lucas. But maybe we can help strengthen your mind to cast the spell," I offer.
"So you think I should do it?" The young man asked, shrinking against Aidan's frame.
"I do not see what else to do, sweetheart. We have to try. Stanislas is in no condition to even attempt this. Aidan has never done a spell and he would not know where to start. Same for me. I always stayed away from magic. It is another form of power than the one I have and I do not know how to combine them properly. We cannot practice or rehearse at this level in such an unstable space. I would do it if I could, but if I approach it the wrong way, I could amplify immensely the problem. And no one here would be strong enough to contain this kind of energy."
Lucas nodded. "You're right. I know." His posture strengthened and he took a step away from Aidan. "That's why I proposed to do it myself."
"Our only hope is to help you frame the spell."
I put my hand on Lucas' arm and he looked at me in silence for a few seconds, taking deep breaths.
"Lucas," Anna called from the entrance. The young man turned his head, wary, and walked slowly towards her.
"I'm sorry," Lucas blurted out, before Anna could say anything.
"I'm sorry too. I just... I'm so scared, Lucas. I can't lose you."
"You won't lose me." His voice grew stronger. "I can do this."
Anna searched his eyes and his gaze did not waver. "You listen to every word Elise says, okay. You do not improvise."
He nodded.
She looked away for a minute. "You know, when I had the car accident, when I thought it was the end, the only thing in my mind was you, that I couldn't leave you." Lucas tried to step closer and leaned his hand on the invisible wall. "But when I woke up, I was so afraid. I thought I couldn't look you in the eyes. I couldn't stand the idea of you being scared of me."
Aidan wrapped an arm around my waist and I rested my head against his shoulder.
"I was never scared of you," Lucas said to his sister. "I would have never been. And I missed you so much when I thought you were gone."
"I know. I missed you too. But I didn't want to be a burden for you. And I still don't. And I don't know how to deal with this. I'm so sorry. I wanted you to be happy, Lucas. That's the only thing I want."
"You are not a burden. And you've been there for me so much since mum and dad died. I wanted to be there for you too, if you needed me."
Anna's face crumpled and she sobbed. "I love you, Lucas. Please, be safe. Please. Come back to me safe."
"I love you too. Everything will be fine. I promise," Lucas said, crying too. "I promise."
