"Lipstick Masquerade", Carpenter Brut
After Lucas' set, I offered him to go to my office to talk in a quieter environment.
"Where is Anna?" He asked.
"She went for a walk with James. He texted me."
He nodded and sat down on the leather couch as I leaned on the desk.
"Anna told me it was over with Charlotte. I was sorry to hear that. Are you okay?" I tried.
"Yeah, I'm fine. She is a wonderful person but... but it couldn't work."
"I understand." He stood up and paced the office. "You know, you can talk to me about anything, sweetie."
"I know," he said. But he did not continue. Instead, he went around the office, looking randomly at objects, taking one of them in his hand, and then putting it back on the shelves, without any clear intention.
But when he grabbed a little talisman, I felt it. The muffled sounds from the party seemed to completely vanish for a second as I focused on Lucas. It now looked so obvious to me. How could have I not realized?
"What did you do, Lucas?" I asked, trying to keep my voice calm.
"What do you mean?" He said turning to face me.
"I mean magic."
His eyes widened. "How do you know? Did you read my mind?"
"Of course not. I can feel it in you."
He took a deep breath. "With everything that happened, I felt so... useless. I wanted to do something. I just... So yes, I'm learning magic."
"Alright. Who is teaching you?" His gaze lowered. "Lucas?" I was now starting to fail to sound calm.
"No one. I'm learning by myself."
"What? Are you serious? You know how dangerous these things are. You cannot learn by yourself."
His gaze defied me. "But I can. I am."
I knew anger would not lead us anywhere. "Sweetheart, it is not that I do not have faith in you. I am just worried. No one can do that by themselves."
He turned his back to me and I stayed where I was, trying to give him some space to process his emotions.
"Lucas, please? Do not shut me out. Tell me what is on your mind."
"I am not a vampire. I am not an immortal. But I can be that."
"I know you can. But you do not have to be. Being human is not being less. I hope you understand that and that you are not doing this for the wrong reasons."
"I'm not. There's something... I don't know. It feels right."
"That is great. But please, you have to find a mentor."
"You all underestimate me."
"We are not, honey."
The moment I realized Lucas kept his back to me because he was doing a spell, it was already too late. I screamed when threads of lights appeared at the tip of his fingers. They flickered, as taken in a sort of short-circuit, before amplifying dramatically.
I pushed Lucas to the floor and there was a silent blast. I felt a deep burn inside me and for a moment I could not breathe anymore. My body wrapped around Lucas' served as a shield and I blocked as much energy as I could.
Lucas went limp and the light disappeared. I lifted my head cautiously and turned Lucas around to take him in my arms. He was unconscious and hurt but alive. I felt sick and exhausted but I knew my life was not in danger. At least at the moment.
I gathered what energy I had left to call mentally for Aidan. My vampire was there in an instant, opening the door and scanning the room with panic in his eyes.
"What happened?" He asked, crouching beside me.
"I am fine, my love, but Lucas is hurt. His hands are burnt. Can you heal him?"
Aidan cradled the young man and cut his own wrist. He gave him a few drops of his blood and the wounds disappeared quickly.
I tried to focus and slow down my breathing. "Lucas tried to do magic. It messed with the protection spell of the club. I blocked a part of the energy blast, but there may be serious damages. The Club. Is everyone okay?"
"Yes, it's as if nothing had happened downstairs. Everyone seems fine. You're sure you're okay?"
He pushed a lock of my hair behind my ear. I pressed into his hand. "Yes, I am sure."
Lucas's shoulder twitched and he opened his eyes.
"Honey, are you alright?" I asked.
"I... yes... I..." And then he remembered what happened and his eyes widened. "Oh my god. What... what did I do? Is someone hurt? Are you hurt?"
He looked confused and terrified.
"I am fine. And fortunately, it seems that everyone is," I said, stroking his hair soothingly. "But I can feel that the magic in the club is unstable now. We have to evacuate."
"I... I'm sorry. I thought I... I wanted to prove to you... that I could do it."
"I know." I sighed, my hand brushing his cheek.
