"Moonlight in Vermont", Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong
On the stage, Aidan leaned on the wall while I sat at the piano. I sang one of his favorite songs, joyful and melancholic at the same time. My voice and my hands on the keys improvised around the pattern of the melody, traveling into the underlying emotions of the lyrics. Aidan looked into my eyes during the whole song and I looked into his. He smiled.
I stood up and hugged him softly. "Thank you," he said.
"Anytime, my love."
I took his hand and we got off the stage. Stanislas crossed my gaze. He recovered his composed expression quickly, but not quickly enough for me not to see the shock in his traits. Or his shiny eyes.
Aidan did not seem to notice and I let the old vampire some space.
The phone in my pocket rang. I took the video call. "Zoé? Wait a minute, I'll bring everyone near the phone." I moved near the entrance of the club and Aidan and Lucas followed me. "Alright, you can talk now. Did you find anything?"
"We are on something, yes, but there are technicalities. Ikshan and Leno are looking for some details in another part of the library."
"What kind of technicality?" I asked.
"Well, we found a possible solution but only someone inside the perimeter could do it and Anna is outside, right?"
I sighed. "Yes. And we know: Anna's magic does not get through the wall. We tried. But none of us inside have enough magic skills to pull a complicated spell off. I can use a magical object but to do a spell out of thin air? No."
"And is it possible to coach the kid?" Aidan asked.
Lucas's face went pale. He did not say anything.
"What? No," Anna said. "This is what started everything. He has not been trained properly. It would be a catastrophe."
"Alright. Thank you, Zoé. We will talk about it. Can you call us back when Ikshan and Leno will be there?"
"Of course. Take care of yourselves."
We all looked at one another, taking a minute to process what Zoé had told us.
"If I can try something, I'll do it. Whatever it is," Lucas said.
All gazes converged on him, and he made a visible effort not to lower his eyes. I took his hand and he squeezed mine desperately.
"Alright, let's not decide anything until they call us back and we have all the information available," I said. "Meanwhile, everyone that has no immediate task to do, take some rest. We will need all our energy when the time will come to try something."
Everyone nodded and scattered in different directions. Aidan looked at me and grinned tenderly. "You should listen to your own advice."
I raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"Get some rest, my love. You are exhausted." I opened my mouth to answer but Aidan kissed me on the lips. "Please."
I sighed and nodded. Reluctantly, I laid down in a booth. I might have fallen asleep almost immediately because when I opened my eyes a little, I felt a blanket over me. I closed my eyes again. Just for a few minutes.
