"Yes I'm changing", Tame Impala
"Your attention, please. We have an electrical problem. Unfortunately, we will have to close the club for tonight. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. You will all be refunded. Please, go to the exit where our staff will give you a voucher before you leave. We hope to see you again very soon at The Pearl. Again we are very sorry and we thank you for your understanding."
Patrons did as I said and the club started to empty itself. I had texted James and Anna to ask them to come back. Well, to come to the door at least, because, as we had soon found out, the magical mess we were now in was keeping us inside. Humans could leave the premises but not supernatural creatures, or, as it appeared, magicians. The invisible wall stood at the entrance of the main room, preventing us from reaching the small entry hall of the club, and all around it.
"Now I know what movie vampires experience," had said Aidan, in an attempt at humor, after having been blocked unexpectedly and quite violently at the backdoor of the club.
We also felt a little disoriented. An effect of the magical disturbance we were in.
It took a little bit of time but soon enough there were only me, Aidan, and Lucas in the club. The lights were now all on. Glasses had been abandoned on the bar and on tables. The floor was dirty.
I leaned on the wall for a minute. I felt so exhausted. I did not know exactly how I had been able to block the blast. It seemed to be an extension of my recently found capacities, a sort of protective reflex. The process had left me weakened, though.
Lucas was sitting on the ground, his back against the bar and his arms around his knees. Aidan stared at him before joining him. He put his arm around Lucas' shoulders and pulled him gently against him. Lucas buried his face into Aidan's chest and cried.
"It's alright, Lucas. It's alright," Aidan said, rubbing soothing circles on the young man's arm.
As Lucas was taken care of, I took a moment to inspect the room, not physically, but with my mind, trying to understand the status of the spell. I could sense it was unstable. Other than that, I could not say. This was not my area of expertise.
But then, my attention was attracted by something else. "Aidan, the storage room," I said.
His head snapped. "Fuck, I should have felt that. Lucas, stay there."
Aidan left gently Lucas who curled around himself, preparing for the worst. We stood up and rushed to the storage room before opening carefully the door. Inside, sitting on the floor against the shelves, was a quite drunk Stanislas. He looked awful, pale, tired and his eyes were haunted.
"What the fuck are you doing here?" Aidan screamed. "Get out."
"Well, apparently, I can't," the old vampire mumbled, looking annoyed. "I would have thought you'd have set a trap to keep me outside, not inside."
I crossed Stanislas' gaze and I could see the fear behind the attitude. "Aidan, can you check on Lucas, please?"
"I'm not leaving you with him."
"My love, please. I will be fine."
Aidan scowled at Stanislas but left us.
"What is going on? Why are you here?" I asked him.
"I was just," he waved his hand, "I just wanted to talk to you about something. But then I reconsidered, and I tried to leave, and I couldn't, literally. What did you morons do?"
I stared at him in silence and his gaze flinched. "What did you want to talk to me about?" I asked, keeping my tone equal.
He laughed. "You know, the usual."
"Have you drunk human blood again?"
He shot me a defiant look. "Does it look like I have?"
"Cut the crap, Stanislas. And come to the main room with me. I'll make you some coffee."
The vampire hesitated. "Your soulmate may object to that."
"Well, I would object to that too but we are stuck here together and, honestly, we have bigger problems than you."
Aidan winced when we came back to the main room but he did not say anything.
A few minutes later, we heard a knock at the door. I opened it and waved at the invisible barrier. "So we are stuck here. Magical wall."
"What the fuck?" James said. He tried to enter, as if he had to test it to believe it. But the resistance was real.
"Is Lucas okay?" Anna asked.
"Yes. And the club is empty now. All the humans were able to leave."
"Why is Lucas still here then?"
Her brother joined us. "Because it's all my fault. I tried a spell and it didn't go well and..."
"You did what? What the hell are you talking about? You know nothing about magic."
Lucas' eyes narrowed. "Clearly I don't know enough, but I'm learning. I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I wanted..."
She cut him off. "I knew something was up. God, Lucas. How could you? You could have hurt people. You could have destroyed Elise's club. You could have died. What were you thinking?"
James took a step forward. "Okay. Very interesting discussion, but we have more pressing matters right now. So how do we fix this mess?"
"I do not know," I said. "But we have to do something fast. For now, we are just trapped but I do not know what will happen if more energy is released."
"We need Sonia, right?" James asked.
Anna sighed. "She is not there, remember? After her last fight with Carlos, she told us she would be MIA for at least a few weeks. I have no idea where she is. I left her some messages but it looked like her phone was not even on."
"Also," I said, taking a step back to let them see the room behind me. "We are not alone."
James gasped when he saw our unexpected companion. "Where are the cameras? Did you decide to launch a reality TV show without telling us or something? What the hell is going on?"
I felt so exhausted I just shrugged.
