The two of them moved around the Zhen Yan Sect's camp. After Shen Lei readjusted his expectations and got a feeling for the way Luo Lin made judgments in these situations, they actually managed to speed up. After going around the whole camp once, they slowly moved inward, and by now, Luo Lin only needed to point to the spot he wanted to move to and Shen Lei would understand.
While practicing, the two of them realized another fact: The spot they finally ended up in was the average between the ones both of them had chosen. This meant that if Shen Lei didn't think of moving but Luo Lin did, they would end up moving half the way to where they wanted to go. If both of them picked two slightly differing spots, they would still roughly make it to where they were supposed to be though.
This was to say that unless they literally wanted to balance on the edge of a cliff, it really didn't matter all that much whether they were perfectly in sync. Realizing this might not seem like much but it made both of them feel calmer. Before, they had figured that any mistake might make them go to a completely wrong place which could hurt them if it happened during a battle. Now though, it seemed that just generally having an understanding of each other would be enough.
As they moved back to the middle of the camp, Shen Lei couldn't help but muse. "If we were to be in a battle and you really don't think you can make a judgment, it might be best to empty your mind and just let me handle it. I'd just need to double the initial distance to end up where I want us to be."
Luo Lin hummed. "We should agree on a few signs we can easily make according to how we want to decide. Anyway, we'll be unlikely to separate if we want to use my ability so it shouldn't be difficult to do something unobtrusive."
Shen Lei nodded while watching his lover point at the next spot.
They moved there in a flash and peered around. Luo Lin didn't see anything but Shen Lei motioned at the ground next to one of the tents.
"There are shadows. It looks like there might be several people behind that tent. Let's see what is going on there."
Luo Lin nodded, thought for a moment, and then pointed to the tent next to that one. In his mind, they needed to get a bit closer but it would be best if they weren't too close either. Being further away meant that they should be less likely to be noticed.
Shen Lei nodded and they moved once again, coming to a stop at the side of one tent while looking behind the other.
There were indeed several people there. From the looks of it, they should have come from the tent in the row further behind and had stepped out of the way so others could move past. The really important part was that among the group of disciples was also the figure of Elder Fa whom they had been looking for.
Shen Lei leaned closer to Luo Lin, his lips curving faintly. "Seems like we found her." After the initial confusion about the ability and how to make this work, he felt that things had become progressively easier. Finally delivering the message to her feet might actually not be as difficult."
Luo Lin nodded but his gaze was thoughtful. Shen Lei usually didn't have to worry as much about others because his level was high. Even compared to the Elders of their sect, he was at least in the same major realm of Nascent Soul even if he hadn't cultivated to the same minor realm as the Elders had. Compared to that, he who was only in the Golden Core stage had more scruples when it came to sneaking up on someone like Elder Fa.
Yes, certainly, he had this small dreamscape now. Still, he didn't know its limits and there was still a chance of being discovered as soon as he opened a window too close to a person. This was especially true if that person's level was higher than his own. Ah, he probably should have invested in some items that could hide one's presence. His second senior martial brother would certainly have some of those lying around in his work room ...
Shen Lei noticed that Luo Lin was hesitant and turned to him. "You don't dare to go over?" He also understood Luo Lin well. Even if he might need some time of adjustment to see how he would react in certain situations, his general knowledge of his lover's behavior was still in place. Right now, it was obvious that he felt hesitant.
Luo Lin's lips parted but for a moment, he didn't know what to say. Did he not dare to do it? Yes, obviously, this was the case. But then, they couldn't just stand here and wait either. Even though it was better to know where Elder Fa was compared to waiting in her tent and wondering about it, it wouldn't get them closer to a resolution at all. So, he had to get over this and accept that they had to do this.
Shen Lei moved his hand, interlacing his fingers with his lover's. "It's alright. This is scary. You're not wrong to feel that way."
"It won't solve the issue though."
Shen Lei nodded. "It won't but some caution won't hurt. It's better to think first and make plans instead of blindly rushing in and regretting it." He glanced around and then pointed to the other side of the tent from where Elder Fa stood. "She's further to the other side so how about moving around the other side to get closer? That way, if she senses something, we'll have a few seconds more to react. If she truly does, we'll retreat immediately. Let's say ... go back to her tent? She might return there to check and then we could still tell her what we came here for."
Luo Lin nodded, feeling slightly better. Even though he was still worried, this was indeed a good plan. No matter what happened, they'd know how to deal with it. That way, he couldn't react wrong in the heat of the moment.
