Chapter 10 - Angle Lake

July 1989

It was the end of July and that meant it was time for the Angle Lake Music Festival.  Zoran and Will were excited to go watch their friends play in the festival.  They were going to have some company who will arrive tomorrow morning. 

"Are you nervous about playing in the festival tomorrow?  It should be a fun weekend."  Will asked Ayla.  She looked at Will with a small smile "honestly no.  We have our act down pat so we just have to do it again like a practice."  "Yeah, people will be so drunk and high they won't know about any mistakes we make playing."  Jack was laughing as he made his observation. 

"I talked to Jane this morning.  She said Lucas is bringing two extra people with him.  A boy named Dustin and Mike Wheeler."  Will's face dropped and his stomach turned nervous.  He didn't know whether to be excited or dreadful.  Mike Wheeler loved him at one time, then dropped him like a hot potato the next.  Will doesn't know which version of Mike he is getting.  "Are you ok Will?"  Zoran knocked Will out of his spiraling thoughts.  "Uggh, fine I guess."  "Fine I guess.  What is really going on with you Byers?  We know Zoran's life story and since you know Mr. Ellis your story must be equally fascinating.  No small-town boy from the States comes to school in Vancouver out of nowhere unless you have a story behind it."  Ayla grinned at Will and he was shocked that Zoran told them about his background.  "You wouldn't believe me if I told you.  The story of my life sounds made up, even I have trouble believing it sometimes."  "Oh believe us, if we can accept Zoran being from the future, we can accept whatever you have to say."  Ayla told Will in a nice calm voice devoid of judgment. 

"Okay, just don't ignore me like I am a crazy uncle or something after I tell you.  It all started when I was 12 years old.  It was a Sunday and my friends Lucas, Dustin, Mike and I were playing a Dungeons & Dragons campaign at Mike's house on November 6th 1983.  The campaign went on for 10 hours and Mike's Mom made us stop at night when it was dark out.  I lived the farthest away from the other 3 so I biked home through a shortcut in the woods.  I felt like something was following me home.  I was scared and went into my house and locked the door.  My family was short of money so my Mom and my brother picked up extra shifts to make money, so I was home alone.  The entity got into my house so I ran to the shed outside where the shotgun was.  I loaded the shotgun but I was kidnapped before I could shoot."  Will spent an hour telling Jack and Ayla about the Upside Down and ending with the timeline change.  Will told Zoran earlier and now is seeing Ayla's face change from disbelief to sadness to anger to lightness to understanding.  She seemed particularly upset when Will told them about Mike and the summer of 1985. 

"So you lived through all that and are still functioning?  Do you get alot of nightmares from that past?"  Jack asked in a concerned voice.  "Yes I do, but maybe the timeline changing is worth my discomfort so others don't have to live in fear and have bad memories.  One good thing that came out of this is that I got to meet all of you."  Will was met with smiles from all three with hugs following starting with Zoran.  "So Byers, do I have to beat up this Mike guy?  How big is he exactly?"  Jack was being protective of a person he just met but cares for.  "Uhh, should I tell them Zoran or do you want to?"  Will told Zoran about Mike a few months ago and showed him the picture of the two taken at the Roane County Fair.  Will wanted Zoran to know he loves Zoran for himself and not because he resembles his ex-boyfriend.  "You tell them Will."  Zoran was smirking.  "Mike is Zoran's height and his body is built like Zoran's.  Also Mike looks exactly like Zoran with different hair."  "You mean like Zoran but different?"  Ayla added.  "No, more like exactly. like. Zoran.  The two could be identical twins."  Both Ayla and Jack's eyebrows arched up in tandem.  "I know I can take Zoran so Mike would be no problem."  Everyone but Zoran laughed at Jack.
