Chapter 5

Shahzain

I reluctantly got up from the bed and walked towards the washroom. I was so excited to go hospital yesterday. The main reason was I knew I would see her. These few years without her in Turkey were very hard. Only I know how much I yearned to hear her voice. To see her angry glares.

But yesterday when I saw her, I was shocked. There were always banters between us but Era never talked to me in such cold and hard tone like she did yesterday. When she called me 'Shah' while tending that little boy I had a hope but that soon got crushed when she went to her cold and blank mood. All day she called me 'Mir' not even Shahzain.

The Era I saw yesterday was completely different from the one I left behind. She was more beautiful, yes, but also cold and blank. What happened to her in all these years?

I splashed the water on my face trying to get her thoughts out of my mind. Taking a quick bath, I got down for the breakfast. My parents were there in the dining table. I ignored them and start buttering the bread. After I went to Turkey, they finally remembered they have children. They started calling once a day but I never talked to them. Though Appi started talking a little bit, I could never bring myself to talk to them. What is the point now that I have learnt to live by myself?

After breakfast, I get ready and leave for the hospital on my bike. On my way, I glanced at The Khan Villa in hopes to get a glance of Era. But it all went in vain.

I reached hospital and started checking the patients. The emergency was too crowded today due to which even the senior doctors were required.

Finally, we got the time for break and walked to the café. This time in café, all of us sat on the same table. That meant Era was also sharing the same table.

"It was such a hectic day." Zoya said with a huff.

"Our shift has not even ended and we are already tired." Aaliya said.

"Welcome to the life of doctors." A new voice said. We all turned our head to see the HOD of Cardiology, Dr. Sheikh.

"Make sure to eat lots of foods and drink plenty of water. You need to be healthy first to treat the patients." Dr. Sheikh advised us and left for his table.

The whole time during the lunch, Era did not talk to me. She only talked to Zoya and Ayaan. Forget about talking, she did not even glance at me. The last time, I met her before leaving everything was fine. But what happened that made her act to me like I am a stranger to her?

I shrugged and had small talks with Aaliya and Hamza. They were quite pleasant to talk.

We returned to the ward after finishing our lunch. After looking at the few patients, I returned to the house. The house was cold and lonely as it used to be before but like before the loneliness did not bother me. Instead, it gave a a sense of calmness and peace.

After freshening up, I left to the Masjid for evening prayers and after returning opened my books for studying. Being a doctor is a very tough thing, we need to update ourselves with the medical knowledge every now and then to avoid any mistakes since our tiny mistakes can cost the lives.
