"Good morning, wifey." Shahzain caressed his wife's cheeks in an attempt to wake her up.

Groaning, Humera snuggled closer to him. "Let me sleep."

Shahzain stayed wrapping his arms around her for a while before standing up and leaving the bedroom. While his wife slept for a few more minutes, Shahzain decided to prepare breakfast for the two of them.

He was surprised to find his parents cooking in the kitchen. He narrowed his eyes at the scene in front of him realizing this had never happened before. He suddenly remembered the thing his wife had said a few days earlier in the café. First feeding his wife in his absence and now preparing breakfast for the whole family. Shahzain had a hunch about what his parents were about to do. However, he was not ready to forgive them. Yes, they had tried to initiate talks with him and had asked for forgiveness, but they were late. Too late.

He had wanted his parents to see him getting awards in school. He had wanted his parents to cheer him on during his cricket matches in school. But the bitter truth was they were absent practically his entire childhood and teenage days.

When he was younger, he had wanted to be a cricketer. He had tried many times to talk to his father about teaching him cricket or sending him to academy, but his father never had time. Instead, it had been the eldest Mr. Khan who had taught him. The old man had always treated him like his own offspring. There were times when he had cried in masjid asking repeatedly why he was not born in Khan family. Why had he been given such a cruel fate?

His mother was the first to notice him. She gave a small smile. "You are here. Come and sit. I have prepared your favorite avocado toast."

A dark chuckle escaped from Shahzain making his parents look at him weirdly. "My favorite? That too Avocado toast? You have got to be kidding me." He took out his apron and wore it before turning to the older couple. "Now, if you will excuse me, I would like to prepare breakfast for me and my wife."

Shahveer sighed looking at his wife's upset face. "We are trying Shahzain. I know we made a mistake, but we are trying to make up for the lost time. She prepared it with love for you can you at least respect her hard work and eat please?"

Anger flared through Shahzain as he heard his father's words. "Really? You expect me to respect her so-called hard work? Do you even have any idea of the times I left the house with an empty stomach during my teenage days? Especially when I had early morning cricket practice before matches? No!! I would have died of malnutrition had it not been for the women in Khan Villa!! So, spare me all this trying façade because I do not need them. You were not there when I needed you the most so stop trying to interfere when I have everyone, I want around me. You are not needed anymore."

Throwing the apron angrily on the floor, Shahzain left for his bedroom.

...

Shahzain was reviewing a case file with Aaliya in his cabin when a frantic Aamira came running towards them.

"Aamira?" Shahzain looked up from the report and frowned at her flustered appearance. On the other hand, Aaliya looked murderous to see Aamira disturbing her time with Shahzain.

"Abdullah Ali Khan. 3rd floor. MRI room." Aamira said, trying to catch her breath. Shahzain's eyes widened upon hearing her words. His heart momentarily stopped. Negative thoughts clouded his mind. No! He had already lost his grandmother, and he was not ready to lose the first person who truly cared about him, except his grandmother. Leaving everything behind, Shahzain ran through the corridors of the hospital to the 3rd floor, with both ladies following him.

"We need to do the immediate surgery, Shahzain. The condition is critical." The doctor in the MRI room said as he was handing him the report of Mr. Khan. All three sons of Abdullah had come to the hospital with their respective wives and were waiting outside the MRI room.

"Prepare the sixth floor's OT." Shahzain said this to one of the nurses before turning to Aamira. "You know whom to send."

Aamira nodded, knowing Shahzain wanted his father to perform the surgery since he was the best in the country.

Shahzain got ready for the surgery and met his father as he tried entering the OT. "You are still too young to perform the surgery." Shahveer Mir said this when he saw his son in a surgeon's attire.

Shahzain looked straight into his eyes. "I know. That's why I am here, sir. To learn." As soon as he said that Shahzain entered the OT while his father followed him, shaking his head.

The situation inside the OT was serious. Apparently, there was a huge blood clot in Abdullah Khan's brain, and the chances of him ending up dead were high. Before starting the procedure, Shahveer glanced at his son, who had his eyes set on the old man in the bed.

From the opposite side of the attending surgeon, Shahzain watched with full concentration as the surgery proceeded. His heart thumped loudly as his eyes caught the signals in heart rate monitor. A chaos erupted within the medical staffs as the situation worsened.

Suddenly the heart rate monitor showed single line making everyone let out a sigh of sadness. Shahzain looked at the monitor in shock. It was hard for him to believe that he lost someone dear to him.

"Time of death – 2:25:05" Shahzain came out of his shocked stupor as he heard the voice of his father. A tear slipped from his left eye as he glanced at the unmoving figure of the man who was a father figure to him. His heart ached as he remembered the times he had spent with the oldest Khan. A painful realization hit him about how he would never see the man laughing or talking to him. Before he could stop, a sob erupted from his mouth and he hurriedly left the OT without paying any attention to his surroundings.
