3 years later,
"Mash Allah, you look so pretty."
Shahzain looked at his wife with loving eyes. He put his palm on her head and recited Ayat al kursi so that no evil will eye his wife and their baby she was carrying.
Humera beamed back at him, a hint of shyness in her smile. Though she was only three months pregnant, Shahzain could already see the subtle changes in her—her glow, the way her eyes sparkled with anticipation. They were both excited and nervous about the new chapter ahead, but they knew they would face it together.
"Are you ready?" he asked, taking her hand in his. They were headed to the hospital; their residency had been completed and there were some award and recognition event for the residents.
Shahzain and Humera arrived at the hospital auditorium, its walls adorned with banners celebrating the achievements of the residents. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement and pride. Colleagues greeted them with warm smiles and congratulations.
Humera's heart swelled with happiness as she spotted her friends, who were all eager to catch up. Shahzain's hand remained steady in hers, his presence a comforting anchor amidst the whirl of activity. They found their seats, the anticipation growing with each passing moment.
The ceremony began, and one by one, residents were called up to receive their awards. The room filled with applause, a testament to the hard work and dedication of each individual. Shahzain could feel the nerves building up, but he kept his focus on Humera, drawing strength from her steady gaze and encouraging smile.
"And now, the award for Excellence in General Surgery," the announcer declared, their voice resonating through the hall. "This year, it goes to a resident who has consistently demonstrated exceptional skill and compassion in every procedure. Please welcome Dr. Shahzain Mir!"
The room erupted in applause as Shahzain stood up, his heart pounding. He glanced at Humera, who beamed with pride. Walking to the stage, he felt a surge of emotions—gratitude, pride, and the overwhelming sense of accomplishment. He accepted the award, his hands slightly trembling, and delivered a short, heartfelt speech.
Next, it was Humera's turn. The announcer called her name for the Cardiology Excellence Award, highlighting her groundbreaking research and compassionate patient care. As she ascended the stage, Shahzain couldn't help but marvel at her strength and dedication.
When the ceremony concluded, they found themselves surrounded by families and friends, the air filled with joyous laughter and heartfelt congratulations. "Alhamdulillah, our kids are still shining," Bushra said, her eyes brimming with tears as she looked at them. The pride in her voice was unmistakable, and it resonated deeply with everyone present.
Humera felt a warmth spread through her as she saw her mother's emotional response. Ahaan, her father, then stepped forward, his face glowing with pride. "I am so proud of you two," he said, pulling them both into a tight embrace, first Shahzain and then Humera.
"From conquering the school academics to conquering the medical grounds together, they came a long way, didn't they?" Rayyan looked at them with proud smile.
"They did, Rayyan bhai."Aamira nodded at Rayyan's words as she embraced her best friend.
The sun was setting as the celebrations wound down, casting a warm golden glow over the hospital grounds. Shahzain and Humera took a moment to step outside, seeking a quiet corner away from the bustling crowd.
Humera leaned into Shahzain, her head resting against his shoulder. They stood there in silence, absorbing the weight of the day and the journey they had taken together. The sky painted hues of orange and pink as if mirroring the warmth and love they felt in their hearts.
"Humera," Shahzain began softly, his voice filled with emotion, "I couldn't have done any of this without you. Your strength, your love—it's what keeps me going."
Humera looked up at him, her eyes glistening with tears of happiness. "We're a team, Shahzain. Always have been, always will be. I'm so proud of everything we've achieved together."
He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close as they both looked toward the future. Their baby would arrive in a few months, a new chapter full of promise and potential. But tonight, they allowed themselves to bask in the triumphs of the present, the joy of being together, and the love that had brought them here.
"I love you, Humera," Shahzain whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"I love you too, Shahzain," she replied, feeling his love envelop her like a warm embrace.
As they stood there, united and at peace, they knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, hand in hand. The future was theirs, bright and full of endless possibilities.
And so, under the twilight sky, Shahzain and Humera embraced the beautiful journey of life, love, and dreams yet to come. The end of one chapter, and the hopeful beginning of another.
