Around six years later....
"Ammi, where is my bag?" Humera yelled from her room.
"Haaye Allah, this girl." Bushra entered the room. "Stop making a fuss and drink this." Bushra offered a glass of water to her daughter.
Humera took the glass and gulped down the water in a go. Bushra helped Humera to arrange her things in the bag. Humera took the stethoscope from her drawer.
"All the best for your day, Appi." She heard shouts from behind her and thanked them before dashing out of the house.
Standing outside the gate of Life Heart Hospital, Humera sighed in contentment and thanked Allah. She entered the Hospital premise with a small smile.
"Humera Ali Khan. An Intern." She told to the receptionist.
The receptionist typed a few data in the computer and took out a card from the drawer. She handed the card to Humera. "Welcome to Life Heart, Dr. Khan and congratulations for completing MBBS with 93%."
"Thank you." Humera said with a smile.
The receptionist nodded her head and said, "Please visit the conference hall in fourth floor in Block D. The building is the one in farthest."
Wearing the card, Humera walked towards the direction pointed out by the receptionist.
Entering the conference hall, she saw all new faces. There were already around 30 interns. Humera took a few steps looking around and stopped in her track. Among all the new faces, there was one she was familiar with. The same face she had not seen since last four years. He was changed. He had gained a few good inches and was looking more handsome.
"Shahzain." The name came out of her mouth before she could stop herself.
As if he heard her, Shahzain looked around before his eyes stopped to the girl whom he had not seen. Like Shahzain, Humera had also changed. He found her prettier than before. She was looking ethereal in that white coat. "Masha Allah."
Shahzain walked towards her with the same smirk he used to wear years ago. "Humera Ali Khan, what a pleasant surprise."
"Shahzain Mir, what an unpleasant shock." Humera said back.
Honestly, Humera was quite bitter at the moment. She knew Shahzain was the Turkey topper. In fact, his percentage was more than the Pakistan topper. Knowing the boy who always tied to her in school, surpassing her years later was like a harsh slap for Humera. When her results came, she was relaxed since she knew she would pass but the pain she felt when she heard about Shahzain's result was unmatchable.
She had prayed since the results day that Rayyan's words regarding Shahzain's return to be a cruel joke but alas. Here was the evidence that proved her wrong.
"Why are you back, Mir?" Humera asked in a cold voice.
Shahzain was taken aback by both her tone and her choice of addressing. "It's my country, Era. Of course, I would be back. Why are you acting like that?"
In stead of answering him, she walked away leaving him confused.
The hospital dean welcomed them and assigned the teams and gave them the schedule. Unfortunately for Humera, Shahzain was a part of her team. There were four more interns in their team. For the first week, they were assigned to the emergency ward.
"It feels like a dream." Zoya, one of the interns who was in a team with Humera said as they walked to the emergency ward.
Humera gave her a small smile. "I know, right?"
As always, the ward was chaotic. They spread around and started tending the patients.
"Shah?" Humera called him. "His bleeding is not stopping." She was tending a boy around ten years old who had come to the hospital due to the wound in the head.
Shahzain crouched near the boy. He showed his fingers. "How many fingers are there? Can you see clearly?" To both the questions the little boy gave affirmative answers.
Shahzain flashed the small torchlight in the boys eyes and nodded. "Eye sight is good."
"The bleeding is too heavy." Humera said before calling out the nearby nurse. "We need to send him for the CT. I have stitched the wound a little bit but we need to be sure if there is any internal bleeding or not."
...
"I am so hungry." Zoya said while entering the hospital cafe.
"You are not the only one, girlie." Ayaan, another intern said. "Humera is the only one who looks fine even after tending all those people in the emergency."
Humera gave a small smile which got wiped out after hearing Zoya's words. "She is not the only one. Look over there, Dr. Mir looks like he is fresh out of the bathroom."
"We don't talk about him. That man is a robot." Ayaan said. "I heard he is sitting for license exam in two weeks."
Humera's head whipped to Ayaan so fast that she was glad it did not break. "Who told you?"
"I heard the nurses in there gossiping." Ayaan replied.
They took a seat in one of the tables and looked at the menu when they heard few whispers.
'He is so hot.' 'I heard he is the Dean's son.' 'He is a Nepo baby?' 'A deserving nepo. He is the topper.' 'A man with good looks and intelligence. What an amazing combo he is.' 'You are talking as though he is a food.' 'I would not mind eating him.'
At the last sentence, the three interns said, "Astagfirullah" together. They glanced at each other and chuckled.
"Poor boy is in danger." Ayaan shook his head. "We need to protect our fellow intern."
"I don't think he needs protection." Humera said. "He looks good enough to protect himself." She turned to look at where Shahzain was talking to the few senior doctors.
The two observed her when she was too busy looking at Shahzain. They shared a glance but did not press on the topic.
The rest of the day in hospital went as smoothly as it was possible for the doctors. Rehan came to pick Humera after her work hours were finished.
"How was the first day, Doctor?" Rehan asked her.
"It was good." Humera said before she glared at Rehan. "Did you know he was returning?"
Rehan gave her a weird look. "All of us knew, Humi. Bhai told us few months ago. Did you forget?"
Humera just huffed. "I was hoping it to be prank."
"You should know very well that Rayyan Ali Khan is not a prankster, Humi." Rehan shook his head at his cousin. "So, did you meet him?"
"Meet?" Humera exclaimed making Rehan flinch. "We are on a same team. Also, he was my partner in two of the cases."
"You are so bipolar, Humi. You act like you resent him but you are also quite good to him. What actually is the issue? He is a good boy." Rehan said to which Humera ignored him and looked out of the car window.
