Humera along with Zoya was on her way to meet her best friend as her class was finished when she saw a few nurses gossiping about a failed surgery. Before she could ask any of them, Aamira called her from a little distance. With a small smile she walked towards her friend without realizing that she was about to get devastating news.
"What happened? You look sad." Humera frowned seeing the upset face of her friend.
Aamira shook her head sadly and took her friend to the place where her family was sitting. Dread filled within Humera as she saw her parents along with her uncles and aunts. Zoya glanced at Aamira questioningly to which Aamira signaled to wait for a while.
"Ammi, Abbu, is everything okay? Why are you all here?" Humera asked her parents worriedly.
As soon as she saw her daughter, Bushra burst into tears worrying Humera more. Humera wrapped her hands tightly around mother and asked, "What happened here? Will someone tell me why she is crying?"
When no one answered her question, Aamira took it upon herself to rely on the bad news. The words that left Aamira's mouth took away the ground beneath Humera. "It's your Dada Jaan, Humi. He is no more."
Humera felt like she had been hit by a bus. Hearing about her grandfather's death was a huge shock to her. Tears started dripping down her eyes with the pain of losing someone dear to her.
"How?" A whisper escaped her. Her father put his hands around his daughter before answering the question. "He slipped from the stairs. We brought him here as soon as possible but he died during the surgery."
Wiping away the tears, Humera turned to her friend. "Who performed the surgery? And were you there?"
Aamira nodded her head sadly. "I was there, and Dr. Shahveer performed the surgery."
Humera nodded before she roamed her eyes around. "Shahzain? Does he know? Where is he?"
They had all seen Shahzain leaving the OT in a devastating state. When neither of them said anything regarding her husband, Humera understood their unspoken words. "He was there." Taking a deep breath, she rushed to the nearby washroom to wash her face.
She cried for a few minutes before washing up her face. She knew how important her grandfather was to her husband. "You cannot be weak, Humera. You have to be there for him." Comforting herself, she left the washroom. Putting on a brave face, she informed her family about her departure to find her husband and left.
Humera rushed through the corridors of hospital. She started asking each and every passing medical personnel if they had seen him but none of them gave her the answer she was hoping for. Being tired, she leaned against one of the walls in the farthest corner of the hospital when she heard a voice.
"What do you think of yourself, huh?" Humera turned to see Aaliya standing in front of her with her crossed hands.
"I am not in mood for your pettiness, Aaliya. Just go away." Humera's harsh tone reached Aaliya's ears which made the latter woman mad.
Aaliya darkly chuckled. "You have been searching for Shahzain in the entire hospital. You think I don't know your intentions? I am well aware what you are playing with." Aaliya took a few steps closer and glared at Humera. "Back off. He will never be yours."
Humera mirrored the glare and smirked at the delusional woman in front of her. "He will never be mine? What a joke!! You know what? He is already mine, sweetheart and a piece of free advice for you. Keep your evil eyes off my husband before I do it for you. And trust me on this, you won't be able to look at anyone when I am done with you."
Knocking Aaliya's shoulder, Humera left for her search while Aaliya looked at the back of Humera with a frown.
Aaliya went inside the hospital with anger as Humera's words echoed in her ears.
"No, I am pretty sure Shahzain won't come tomorrow." On the way, Aaliya heard Nurse Aamira's words which made her angrier. That Aamira really thought she knew Shahzain, huh. What a bragging idiot! Thinking that Aaliya decided to intervene. "Stop sprouting nonsense, Aamira. Shahzain is a strictly professional person. He would not take a leave just because of a failed surgery."
Aamira chuckled looking at her. "You really think you know everything about him? Well newsflash, Dr. Aaliya 'I know everything about Shahzain Mir'. You don't.!! None of the Mirs will come tomorrow. It's the funeral of Abdullah Ali Khan. Everyone knows Khans are one of the greatest shareholders of the hospital. Not only that these two families are also neighbors but also Shahzain spent most of his time with the Khans while he was in Pakistan back then."
"How do you know that?" Another nurse who did not like the tone Aamira used on Aaliya asked.
"Humera Ali Khan." A soft whisper from behind Aaliya gathered the attention of the people there. It was Nurse Sadiya. Everyone frowned at her words. Sadiya turned to Aamira. "That's why Shahzain is comfortable only in her presence. They have known each other since their childhood. No wonder the only person with whom he doesn't maintain his professionality attitude is Humera."
"Seriously?" Aaliya snapped. "What connection does she have with this? The two of you just have to bring her in every conversation that includes Shahzain, don't you?" Aaliya was not ready to believe the words Humera had said earlier. She was still so sure that Humera was lying.
Aamira gave a weird look to Aaliya. "Are you dumb or just pretending to be dumb? You could not connect the dots? Well, let me tell you something. I hope you do not forget whatever I am about to say since it is the biggest part of Shahzain's life. Humera Ali Khan is the granddaughter of Abdullah Ali Khan and one of the dearest people of Shahzain. Shahzain and Humera literally grew up together." Aamira turned to leave but stopped in her tracks. She turned around and looked at Aaliya with a mocking smile. "You know, the women in Khan family always dreamed of marrying Shahzain and Humera, and I am sure it's the same with Mirs."
Aamira left the place leaving a red-faced Aaliya behind with the other nurses who gave her pitiful looks.
