One year later

Humera

Reaching the kitchen, I was surprised to see my in laws working together. This was something I had never witnessed.

"As salaam alaykum." I entered the kitchen.

"Walaikum as salaam, Humera." My mother-in-law greeted me back. "Go and settle in the dining room, I would arrange plates for you."

I frowned at her but did as she told. Within a few minutes, they started serving me foods while I looked at them in utter surprise. This was something unusual. They had never done something like this to me. Should I be concerned about them planning to kill me?

"Don't worry. It is not poisoned." My father-in-law said making me let out a nervous smile. I tasted the food and it was really good.

"This is very tasty." I told them to which they brightened with smile and started eating too. After finishing the food, I left for the hospital.

"What happened to you?" Aamira asked me when she saw me. Yes, my best friend, Aamira. She came back to attend my marriage and got married to the cousin of my husband. Ever since, she was in Pakistan and had joined our hospital since she was a registered nurse.

"My in laws made breakfast for me. That was so weird. They had never done anything like that ever and my father-in-law even said that it was not poisoned when I hesitated to take the bite."

"That is a news." Aamira said with a shocked face. "What do you think they did that?"

I shrugged since I was wondering the same too. They had never been evil to me but what they did in the morning was something very new. I have never seen them in the kitchen. In fact, I don't think my husband knows his father can cook.

"Don't overthink. Maybe they decided to treat you since you are working so hard." She suggested to which I nodded at her and bidding her a bye, I walked to my class.

"Mash Allah, you took away my breathe, Dr. Khan." I rolled my eyes at Zoya's dramatics. Like me, Zoya had also opted for Cardiology whereas Ayaan was in Radiology.

"How are you so jolly early in the morning?" I asked her settling my books on the desk. We had two classes today and evening duty.

"Because Dr. Haider is taking our first class." She said jumping like a little child. Dr. Haider Mirza is the senior cardiologist in our hospital. He is considered to be one of the bests in the entire city. He is Zoya's childhood love and now a fiancé. They are getting married next month.

"You act like you do not see him every day." I commented to rile her up. The thing is Dr. Haider is quite professional so I think it's good to say he barely pays extra attention to Zoya and not only that, he is a complete workaholic. They are totally opposite.

"Come on, Humi. You know how he is." She said with a pout.

"I have an idea, Zoya." I poked her. "How about you not pay attention to him? I think he is playing too hard to get. If you act like ignoring then I am sure he would pay more attention to you."

"Are you sure?" She asked me to which I nodded at her. As I told her, Zoya spent the entire class burying her head in the book. I observed Dr. Haider all throughout the time.

"Dr. Zoya, my office, now." After ending the lecture, he looked towards our direction and after uttering those words, he left.

Zoya looked at me with wide eyes. "Don't start acting like a puppy in love, okay? Now, go. I will be with Aamira when you return." I pushed her. She packed her belongings and left while I walked to the other direction. There was still two hour for other class to start so I decided to take a stroll.

"They were so in sync while working." "I ship them totally. I hope they get married." "Dr. Shahzain and Dr. Aaliya are literally made for each other."

I halted hearing the last sentence from the gossiping of the nurses. Shaking my head, I continued on my way.

"Why do you look irritated?" I asked Aamira as I reached to her desk.

"Tired of hearing about how good Dr. Aaliya looks with Dr. Shahzain." She said with a disgusted face making me chuckle.

I took a seat beside her. "I heard on my way too. What's this hassle all about though?"

"There was a mock surgery yesterday and apparently, Aaliya and Zain were together in a team and also the only team to master the surgery perfectly. So, all of them are fawning over it." Aamira said. "You won't believe the number of sinful things I have heard from these nurses. Astagfirullah, they are too much."

"What is too much?" We turned to see another person joining us. It was Nurse Sadiya. I gave her small smile while Aamira said, "The rumors."

"They don't suit each other." Nurse Sadiya said which made us look at us in surprise.

"What? Don't look at me like that. I have never seen Shahzain talk about anything other than work and the guy is too respectful. He knows how and where to maintain distance. Aaliya is just trying unnecessarily. The more she tries to come closer the farther he moves away. So, we can easily say he is safe." Nurse Sadiya said. "Besides, I think he has his eyes set on someone else."

"What?" We exclaimed hearing her words.

"Sh... don't make noise. I am not telling you anything more. Focus on your tasks instead of gossiping, Aamira. And you, go back to study." She said with a fake stern and walked away.

"Why are you here by the way? Don't you have a class?" Aamira asked me to which I shook my head negatively while putting my head down on the desk. "Not until next two hours. Also, I have an evening duty today."

"Aw, my poor child. Didn't you have an evening shift yesterday too? And where is your other one?" She patted my head.

"Dr. Haider." I replied closing my eyes.

"Oh." Aamira said. "You can sleep. I will wake you up when it is time, Humi. Allah jaane kitne din se nahi soyi ho. (Allah knows for how long you haven't slept.)

I gave her a thankful smile before letting myself disappear in the world of sleep.
