Sitting on a bench beside her husband, Humera took his hand on hers. She had finally found him sitting alone in the western part of the hospital area which had a beautiful garden.
Shahzain put his head in her shoulder and let the tears that were held until the moment flow. Humera rubbed his back as her husband sobbed in her arms.
"I saw it, Era. I saw him losing his last breath with my own eyes. I knew the condition was critical and the chances were low but still there was a hope. Why did he have to die, Era? He left us breaking his promise. Why?" Tears dropped from Humera's eyes continuously as she heard sobbing voice of her husband. But she focused in comforting the man in her arms.
Although the recently dying man was closer to her by blood, he had more significance in her husband's life. Her grandfather was the one to teach him cricket. He was the one to applaud loud whenever Shahzain lifted his prizes whether that was academic or sports. Even when he had lost his grandmother, Shahzain had seek comfort in the arms of the Khan patriarch. She knew her grandfather talked to him everyday while he was in Turkey.
Abdullah Ali Khan was a father Shahveer never could be for Shahzain. That's why his death had devastated Shahzain more than Humera. Literally speaking, Humera had lost a grandfather and Shahzain had lost the father. How was she to comfort the man who had seen his father dying in front of his eyes?
His pain was hurting her more. Humera did not like this look in his face. Feeling his tears on her shoulder, tugged her heart painfully. She did not understand why. She had seen him crying years ago on his grandmother's death but now years later when he cried the same way she felt herself in pain.
Was she falling in love with her husband? It was probably a wrong timing to think about that but she could not shrug away the heartache she felt as he cried in his arms.
"I am sorry. You must think I am so pathetic for crying when you are the one who was closer to him. He was" Shahzain looked at her apologetically but Humera put her hand on his mouth to stop him from further speaking.
"You are talking as if I don't know you, Shah." Humera caressed his tear strained cheeks.
"Right." He nodded softly.
"Do you want to talk? About what happened in there?" Humera asked taking his hand on hers.
Shahzain sighed and put his head on her shoulder. "I knew it, you know. I knew the chances of the surgery being successful was minimal but I still had a little hope in me. There were two big clots in the brain. To remove a single blood clot is hard but removing two and that too distances apart; its harder. Somewhere inside I knew the operation would fail but I did want to regret later. There would have been a lot of what ifs had we not performed the surgery but that does not mean it's easy right? I think a part of me wanted to be with him during his last moments. That's why I insisted in being inside the OT fully knowing that the outcome might be too painful to bear.
Why is life so unfair, Era? Why is it like that?"
Humera said nothing instead just tightened her hold on his hand. The couple stayed for a longest time at that place away from others just mourning the death of their closed one and providing the solace to each other.
"Do you want to go back or return home?" Humera asked him after sometime.
"I will go inside now. It would not be good to leave in the middle without reporting anyone. Let's tell the senior and return together?" Shahzain looked at his wife questioningly.
Humera nodded at him and the two of them walked hand in hand inside the hospital.
The medical staffs around them looked at them with wide eyes and open mouth. Whispers erupted seeing them together. They knew there will be rumors by the end of the day in the entire hospital but they did not care for anything else.
