Thursday and Friday came and went. The car wasn't performing as the team had originally hoped but to be fair the car had been underperforming all season. Charles had been extremely stressed after the practice sessions, so once again we opted for a quiet night in. It wasn't like I cared all too much about going out anyway.Qualifying was getting closer and I sat in Charles' driver's room watching him get ready to head out.
"I just don't get what happened, we were doing okay last season and this time it's like the car has become a Williams. I'm trying but it feels like everything I do is going wrong-" He said as he sat next to me.
"Charles I know these aren't the results you were hoping for but you are still extremely talented. Do not let get into your head. The car might suck now but they're working on it okay? It's teaching something to the entire team." I said as I rubbed his back.
"You still have qualifying today let's focus on one thing at a time okay?" I said leaning my head onto his shoulder.
Soon one of his engineers came in to let Charles know that it was time to head into the garage. I held his hand as he guided me through the paddock to the Ferrari garage. He quickly introduced me to some of the people who were there but mostly those focused on helping him through the weekend. Their social media manager was a sweet girl who offered to stay by me throughout the weekend so I wouldn't be so bored when Charles was busy. She led me over to where the headphones were so I could listen to Charles' radio and not hurt my hearing with how loud the car was.
As I walked back to where we could stand to watch the screens I saw Charles getting ready to put on his helmet. Once he saw me he walked over to me and gave me a tight hug.
"Try and forget about everything else besides what's on track okay? I'll be here cheering you on." I said as I gave him a quick kiss before gently pushing him back towards his car.
My heart couldn't help but beat rapidly as I watched him drive out on track. I knew that this job was dangerous but it was also his greatest passion and you couldn't help but admire his dedication. His frustration was evident on the radio with the results he was getting. Then it all seemed to happen so quickly. As charles went to turn, he seemed to understeer and went off the track crashing into the barrier. The crash didn't seem to be extremely dangerous but nonetheless I knew that this was going to be extremely hard on Charles.
"Charles, are you okay? can you get out of the car?" His engineer asked through the radio.
It was silent until we heard Charles speak a few seconds later.
"Yeah, I'm so sorry guys." He said.
He made it back to the garage after the race marshalls picked him up and drove him back. He had to talk to his engineers first before I could see him. Once he was free I went up to him and hugged him tightly.
"Oh my god Charles are you okay, do you feel okay? Does anything hurt?" I asked as I pulled away taking him in to see if there was any visible injuries.
"No, Lina I'm okay. I'm sorry you had to see that-"
"Don't you worry about that right now, what matters is if you're okay. Do you want to go to the med center?"
"No baby trust me I'm okay, I'm sure they'll make me go before I head over to do media." He said and as if on cue his PR manager came over to take him away. They let me know that I was welcome to come with him to see the medics but I would have to head back to the driver's room once he headed to do media interviews.
We headed out of the paddock hand in hand. The atmosphere felt tense and there was no denying that Charles was in his head about todays results. Once we were in the car, he put his head on my should as i played with his rings.
He intertwined our fingers and rubbed his thumb on the back of my hand. He squeezed my hand 3 times. I returned the action and leaned my head on top of his. We had each other. I know everything must've felt so stressful for him but we had each other.
