District Court of California
Los Angeles, CA

Deanna was sitting in court, awaiting her fate as her murder trial was finally over. The jury had been in deliberation for the last two and a half hours. The prosecution was working hard to make sure she either  spent the rest of her life behind bars or was sent to death row. It was so unfair, all she did was defend herself against a man for the last 7 years made her life a living hell. A man who abused her physically, verbally and psychologically. A man who caused her to be infertile as a result of the repeated miscarriages that resulted from savage beatings, not to mention the repeated infections with sexually transmitted diseases due to his constant infidelity. Shawn robbed her of everything—her dignity, her self respect, her chance at motherhood and now he was robbing her for the last time from beyond the grave—this time robbing her of her freedom. But when she really thought about it, the son of a bitch, in her opinion, got exactly what he deserved. The only remorse that she felt was that she didn't kill him sooner.

As she was lost in her own thoughts, her attorney nudged her...

"Hey listen, don't worry. If it's a guilty verdict, then we will appeal it." He whispered in an attempt to reassure her.

At that moment, they heard the bailiff speak....

"All rise, court is back in session. The Honorable Thomas Monaghan, presiding."

Deanna and her attorney stood and remained standing until they were instructed to sit down.

At that moment, the jury began to file back into the courtroom and take their respective seats.

Has the Jury reached a verdict?" The Judge asked.

"We have, your honor." The jury foreman replied, as he gave the paper to the bailiff, who handed it to the judge. The judge read the paper and then returned it to the bailiff who handed it back to the jury foreman.

Will the defendant please rise?" The Judge said.

As Deanna stood with her attorney, a sudden feeling of dread overcame her. "This was it", she thought. The next words spoken would determine if she would be a free woman or if she would spend the rest of her life behind bars.

"We, the jury, find the defendant Deanna Elaine Carter, in the above entitled action of 1 count of the crime of 1st degree murder with malice afore thought....guilty." The foreman read.

At that moment, for Deanna, it felt like all the oxygen had been sucked out of the room. Her legs became weak, causing her to collapse back into her chair. Her chest felt tight and she couldn't breathe...

"Counselor, please have your client stand." The judge said, unmoved by her reaction.

"Come on Deanna. You have to stand." Her attorney said as he gently helped her to get to her feet.

After her attorney helped her up, the judge continued to speak...

"Ms. Carter, for the heinous nature of your crime, I hereby sentenced you  to the California Department of Corrections for the rest of your natural life." The judge said matter of factly.

"N-natural life?! Why?! He almost killed me!!!" Deanna yelled out.

"Order in the court!" The judge yelled as he banged his gavel.

"No!!!!! This isn't fair!!!!! I only defended myself!!!!" Deanna screamed out, as her attorney tried to calm her.

"I'll have order in this court, or I'll clear the court room!!" The judge said again as he banged his gavel.

"It's not fair!!! It's not fair!!!" Deanna wailed.

"Please calm down. We're gonna appeal it, so don't worry." Her lawyer tried to assure her.

"Bailiffs, please remove the defendant!" The judge ordered.

As the bailiffs came to remove Deanna from the courtroom she was still yelling, crying, and protesting.....

"Noooooo!!!!!! It's not fair!!!!!!" She wailed, as she was taken away, her protests echoing as she's escorted from the courtroom.
