A few days after Halloween things were slowing down at the patch, like always. We usually closed down between now and November, but I was seeing if it was cost effective to keep a skeleton crew on and just start to get ready for Christmas with the tree and everything that went with it.
I was sitting in the kitchen at the counter eating some soup Agatha made for us for lunch. Steve and I were sitting, eating and planning a date night for a few days from now.
"Agatha, you ever think of making enough of these soups for us to sell in the winter. I bet they would be a huge seller if we packaged them and placed them in a cooler in the shop just to be reheated for the people at their homes..." I suggested and she looked at me oddly.
"Never did but now I am. I would need a little bit higher food budget." Agatha said and I smiled.
"You can have it." I said.
"Don't you need to consult with me dear sister?" I heard a voice say from the doorway to the kitchen. "I mean I do co-own with you." John said coming in.
"Gotta spend money to make money John." I said.
"How much are we spending?" John asked.
"Once I figure out the price, I will let you know." I said and he just half nodded and then looked at Steve.
"I have to go check the trees out in the back acreage. Why don't you come? You seem to be sticking around with my sister for a while." John said as Steve finished eating. I groaned and shook my head.
"Don't feel like you have to go..." I trailed off looking at Steve and he shook his head and kissed my cheek.
"I'll go, shouldn't go out all that way alone..." Steve looked at John who nodded.
"Right."
"Okay, well I will be back in the office when you guys get back. Come and find me." I said and he nodded. They went to walk out. "Oh John, what about Garrett? Should I pick him up from school?"
"Yes, please. Bring him here." John said and I nodded. Steve gave me a smirk and they walked out.
**STEVE POV**
John and I took a truck to the trees. Once he parked, we got out and started walking.
"Okay I just want to check the branches, make sure everything looks good. Don't want to leave a tree that looks dead." John said. I nodded as we started walking up a row of trees.
It was silent, eerily silent, the only sound was out boots crunching the leaves under our feet.
"I know you think I have something to do with Olivia." John broke the silence.
"What?" I asked.
"That's why you're always around. I mean your cop outfit looked pretty damn convincing on Halloween. You a cop Steve?" John asked.
"Nope, I work with my friend Bucky. We own our own business."
"So, you just happened to meet my sister while stopping into the shop while looking for a wedding venue?" John asked.
I knew what he was doing, and he wanted to make sure stories matched up.
"They weren't technically looking for a wedding venue, your sister offered up the place for a wedding. We just kind of clicked from there. I kept coming in to see her and then finally we decided to go out on a date."
"A date to my pumpkin patch..."
"Technically both of yours and she didn't see a problem. She enjoyed her time, and I enjoyed mine."
"I just think you should have come to me. Like oh I don't know you using the barn on our property as your fuck-nest as well."
I stopped walking and looked at John.
"What?"
"Something my sister doesn't know if I installed cameras in that barn about a month ago so everything you two did on the camera, even though it wasn't seen the audio was caught. Not something I wanted to hear at all. So, you may want to fuck my sister somewhere else next time." John said. I ignored him and continued to walk. "I mean it wasn't like it was the first time I ever heard her have sex. My room was next to her when we were in high school, and she snuck guys in all the time. I don't think it was ever the same guy twice. My sister was such a little -..."
John didn't have a chance to finish that sentence when I pushed him into a tree and held him there.
"Don't even think of continuing that sentence. Your sister is one of the most amazing women I know. She deserves to be treated better than you have ever treated her. She covers for you, takes care of your son when you can't and singlehandedly ran this patch during the fall when you kept going missing. This was all after someone attacked her on the land. You need to be grateful she had stuck by you and always been there for you in your corner when everyone in this town is against you." I said giving John one more shove and let him go.
John just stood there looking at me and I didn't know what was going to happen. Before I could even think about blocking his John threw a punch and hit me in the jaw. I retaliated quickly and punched him back in his face. Soon we were in a full-blown fist to cuffs fight just punching and hitting each other.
"HEY!" We heard someone yell and looked to see Autumn driving us to use in a golf cart. "I was coming to check on you guys. What the hell is going on?!" Autumn continued getting out of the cart.
"Your boyfriend doesn't know his place!" John yelled and going to hit me again, but Autumn stopped him by getting in the middle.
"Your brother is an absolute asshole and doesn't realize he needs to watch where he steps and watch what he does." I said.
"What's that supposed to mean?!" John asked.
"You know what it means asshole!" I yelled. Autumn just groaned.
"Okay stop!" Autumn yelled. She was pinching the bridge of her nose. "John, you do whatever you have to do up here, I will send Thor to come join you. Steve, you come back with me." Autumn said.
"No, I want to stay." I said and she looked at me with a pointed look. She knew why I wanted to stay, I wanted to continue this with John.
"Steve! Get in the cart!" Autumn said sternly and I just looked at her and I knew she meant business and was about to kill me herself. I walked to the cart as she stood with John for a minute, and I overheard her conversation.
"You need to stop John, I swear to god. Do you even care about this place anymore or just want to make my life a living hell?" Autumn asked.
"I want to make your life a living hell. You deserve it for taking this place from me." John said. Autumn just screamed in frustration and walked to the golf cart.
We rode in silence for a minute as she grabbed the walkie talkie.
"Thor, I need you to join John in the back acreage please."
"On it." Thor's booming voice came through the walkie.
"Autumn..." I said and she shook her head.
"All I can say is thank god I came out there when I did. If he had killed you Steve..." She trailed off and I saw tears in her eyes. I took the wheel from her and pulled off to the side of the dirt road and she stopped the cart. I pulled her to me, and she cried in my chest.
"I can't lose you too." She sobbed.
"I'm not going anywhere, I promise." I said. I kissed the top of her head.
