It's only been two days since Mom brought Hugo home, and the little shit has been more of a hassle than I expected.
Dogs are one of my favourite animals, but I never realised how much effort it truly takes to care for one. The non stop barking was expected; back in France, one of our neighbours, Sylvie, had a Labrador. I don't remember there being a night where I didn't here the cute yet incredibly frustrating specimen barking. Hugo is no different, although he's definitely not as loud as Sylvie's dog.
He does, however, have a shedding problem. After school yesterday, I returned to a home filled with golden hairs scattered around the house, contrasting with the grey theme of the rooms. The perfectly painted doors were also adorned with bite marks. Despite her day off, Mom wasn't able to stop him from trying to destroy the house we've owned for the past ten weeks.
Thankfully, as I place the plate that previously contained a slice of toast with nutella into the sink, Hugo is fast asleep in the corner of our kitchen. Just by looking at his still figure atop his bed, anyone would be filled into thinking he's an adorable creature. I've come to learn that his behaviour defies his cute appearance.
Walking out of my house is a difficult task. I usually am tired in the mornings, but not to this extent. After reliving my father's graceful exit from my life at half four in the morning, I was forced to mindlessly scroll through my phone with music blasting in my ears until my alarm rang. It's not a surprise to me that I feel like I could collapse onto the floor and a fall into a deep sleep before even leaving my house. No amount of concealer is able to hide the fact that this morning, I'm a miserable bitch.
I shut the front door, leaning back against it with a slight groan at the sunlight hitting my face. My head instinctively turns to my right, looking into Levi's front yard. I never understood why, but each morning before school I always look into his yard. It's typical for me to observe my surroundings, but to be honest, I care about that particular area of land more than the other places I've examined.
The only difference this morning is that Levi is standing right outside his door too. My eyes widen slightly as I stare into his brown ones, noticing how his eyes are also wider than usual. A wave of relief washes over me at the sight. I almost smile at the sight of his pretty face, hoping he gives me that smile that shows his dimples that I've grown to love. I can hear a low "Good morning" escape his mouth, followed by the random questions he asks me in the morning when he walk to school together.
But then, I see the look swirling in his dark eyes. First, a flicker of surprise crosses his face, immediately replaced with a look of what should've been anger. Of course, he wasn't mad at me. Levi never gets mad, but I'd much rather see him be pissed at me than the expression he's sporting now. One of betrayal, hurt, sadness. His shoulders drop, along with the corners of his lips that used to always be upturned at the sight of me. There's a slight clench in his jaw, showing his discomfort.
