The supermarket is busier than usual, bustling with people looking for pies and turkeys and anything else that screams Thanksgiving.

In France, Thanksgiving is not a thing. I had never heard of it until my sisters and I watched Gossip Girl. Recently, I've decided that it's quite a stupid holiday. Why not truly appreciate the things in your life everyday rather than once a year? I've learned that we should be grateful for everything all the time. The good thing about it is that on Thursday, there will be no school. However, it won't be a day for me to stay at home and do nothing. We're celebrating it with Levi's family.

It's strange, really. I always thought of Thanksgiving to be an intimate thing, but Mrs. Cheong was quick to invite us to their home when she overheard Levi and I talking about how my family has never celebrated it before. She told me to pass the message along to my mom, something I planned not to do. I was going to give her an elaborate excuse as to why my family couldn't go over after mulling over it. She didn't need me to tell Mom, though. She did it herself, speaking to her over the wall separating our houses. Of course, Mom agreed.

I didn't think she'd say yes so quickly. From our time here, I haven't seen her speak much with Levi's mother or father. They must speak more than I thought since they talked so happily from their own yards.

Due to our invite, Mom and I are shopping for all the traditional Thanksgiving foods. Mom insisted for Mrs. Cheong to give her a list of the things they were going to buy so that we could get half of them. She didn't want them to have to double up and spend more money because of my family. There would be eight of us in total; me, my family, Levi, his parents and his sister. I'm almost excited to meet her. He's said so many good things about her, so I'm hoping she's as lovely as their parents.

Mrs. Cheong also promised to make us Korean foods, the main thing I'm anticipating for Thursday.

Saturday likely wasn't the best day to go to the supermarket. Of course everyone was here to do their shopping, but this was the only day we could go.

"Les œufs," Mom mumbles, scanning the aisles for eggs. She her lips press together when her eyes land on them. She walks over to them as I follow behind her, bending down slightly to pick them up. She doesn't notice the tall man beside her also reaching for the eggs, causing their hands to bump into each other.

The collision pushed the stack of eggs back, the one on the top sliding off the pile. Mom can't even process what's happening, not acting quick enough to save them. Fortunately, the man beside her already has one hand on the stack eggs, the other holding the carton of eggs that fell before they collided with the floor.

Mom lets out a sigh of relief as nothing happens, turning to look at the man. "I'm so sorry," she apologises, bending her head.

The man shakes his head vigorously, the dreads of his hair moving as well. "It's fine, really." He has a large smile on his face as he looks at her, the action visibly relaxing her. He stretches his hand out, beckoning her to take the carton. "Take this."
