Say something, you fool!

Kane's mouth opened to tell her—tell her that maybe they could try to be something, but his tongue tied in knots. Josette shifted next to him and he'd no idea she was thinking the same thing.

"The next four days should be fun," Josette said, "As long as you behave."

Kane sighed, "I can't make any promises, but I can try for you."

Josette reached over to find her tea—she was almost out.

"Is that..?"

"No babies for us.." Josette said, completely forgetting she'd already missed one cup the night they made love for the first time.

Kane's stomach fluttered. Babies with Josette Danvers delighted him.

"So, would you like something to drink?" Josette asked as the blanket slipped off of her, exposing the marks he'd put on her body.

"Not your tea!" Kane joked, running his fingers over the bruises and little bites on Josette's legs and arms.

Josette giggled, looking down at her flesh, "It doesn't hurt—I promise."

"I'll be doing it again then.." Kane said, sitting up with her and massaging her stomach.

"I want what you do," she whispered, "A good life—big family. I want to be a good mother. My mother was so good to me, Kane."

Kane kissed her on the shoulder, "If she was anything like you then I already know."

"How do you know? Is it fast like Esther?"

"If I'm pregnant? Sometime it's right away, but I haven't felt anything if that's what you're asking."

Josette hesitated to tell him of the dull ache she did feel in her lower belly, but she assumed it was just from being rough.

"Emma."

"Emma?"

"I like the name Emma for a girl," Kane said, "I know most guys don't think about that, but I do."

"That's a pretty name," Josette smiled, "I like that a lot actually. What about a boy?"

"My father's name was Sebastian..my mother's was Belinda...what about you?"

"Nathan,"Josette told him, "My mother was Anna, but I'd want my children to have their own names—their own identities."

"Same..." Kane agreed, "I like the name Wren for a boy."

Josette smiled, "You're reading my mind!"

"I can't read minds, but are you serious? You like that?"

"I do!" Josette told him, "Are you spying any girls in your den?"

"Nah," Kane shook his head, "I don't feel anything when I'm around them. They're all being married off anyway. Of course, you'll probably end up with Cecil." He teased.

"Oh, well, the world is yours, Mr. Dempsey," Josette said, "I am sure you could get any woman you wanted and I can just take Cecil.." she winked at him, "You can take Maribel—or any other girl you set your sights on."

"But I don't want just any woman.."

"You know what I mean," Josette shrugged, "It's hard to find a guy in the Light Forest. I mean it's vastness is overwhelming, but everyone's taken or not interested."

"Who wouldn't be interested in you?"

"Lots of men," Josette blushed, "Not that I've been looking, but I want to settle down. I'm young, but my cottage is so lonely..I can't believe I'm telling you all of this."

Kane smiled, "I want you to tell me everything. I admit I might have women warm my bed quite often, I don't feel my heart flutter when I am with them—it's just sex to us. Then I am all alone again."

"Do you think that's why you are—chaotic?"

"Most definitely," Kane told her, "I feel like I need to be this persona or people won't take me seriously. It got us through the battles the last few months—I am a hot head, stubborn and arrogant—I've a huge reputation that is undesirable, but it gets me what I need—what my family needs and when I am married, it'll get me what my woman wants and needs."

"You are certainly sure of yourself."

"I have to be," Kane said, "You should be, too. I see how you are with your coven. They look up to you as they should. You're an amazing leader."

"What if you get with a woman who has obligations away from your den?"

"Like what?"

"Like....a mother witch?"

"Like you?"Kane smiled, "Hell, if we got together I guess we'd just build a home smack dab in the middle of the forest and when we were needed, we'd be there."

"That's a hard call, isn't it?"

Kane nodded, "Yes, because once I'm leader I can't just leave my pack."

"When I'm leader I can't leave my coven."

"Not even if you fell in love?"

"Would you leave your pack if you fell in love?"

Kane thought about it, "Putting me on the spot here, but I guess I did the same to you.."

Josette giggled, "I guess it's a hard call."

Kane shrugged, "If you and I got together, we'd do what I said and build a home in the middle."

"With Emma and Wren?"

Kane grinned, "You, me, Emma, and Wren.."

Josette swore she felt her soul leave her body and then reenter. The way he looked at her made her heart flutter—just as he spoke of earlier. How could this be? This couldn't be happening...

"I like you.." she said. That was easy, simple, friendly...

Kane smiled, "I like you too, little dove—probably more than I should."

Josette turned to him, pressing her lips to his.

"I could fall in love with you, Kane, but I'm trying so hard not to.."
