"Wanna sit on my lap?"
Josette giggled, "Why are you always trying to get me to sit on your lap? You know that leads to other things."
Kane shifted in his seat,"Precisely why I want you there. "
He stared at her for the longest time, taking in her beauty, her precious eyes that seemed to stare deep into his soul.
"You're gonna miss me,"he said,"Aren't you?"
Josette sighed,"I don't know, Kane, you sure do know how to cause trouble."
Kane chuckled,"Yeah, but it's been a blast."
Josette couldn't argue. She'd never been much of a go-getter when it came to men. She didn't really know how to approach them and with Kane it had seemed so easy.
"I apologize for my behavior when we first met.."
Josette glared at him,"No you're not! "
Kane smiled,"OK, maybe not fully... "
Josette fixed the ribbons in her hair and adjusted her skirts,"I don't think we would have been on this journey if you'd not been so persistent. I appreciate that. It's been nice getting to know you. "
"You, too little dove. "
There was an awkward silence between them for the longest time before Josette asked if he wouldn't mind handing her a brush from her bag.
"Let me brush your hair," Kane said as he watched Josette tire of the ribbons. She threaded them through her locks and smiled.
"OK, " she agreed, turning in the seat as Kane sat behind her and started the brush strokes.
"You have such beautiful hair. I hope when I have kids, my daughter lets me brush her hair. "
Josette smiled, enjoying Kane's touch.
"I'm sure she will. You'll be a great father one day, Kane."
Another silence. They really didn't know what to say. Something was there, but they couldn't put it into words.
"We're almost home," Josette said as the carriage entered the Light Forest,"I can't believe it. Seems like forever since we've been here. "
Kane nodded,"Yeah, my pack headed out months ago to fight the war. "
Josette felt the ribbons being strung back into her hair, but she didn't mind. The more Kane touched her, the better she felt.
The closer they got to her village, the more anxious she got. Josette's hands trembled and her heart beat wildly in her chest.
Kane felt the same way. He held her close knowing that after she was dropped off, he'd have a few hours alone in that carriage before reaching the New Moon den.
"Fairies... " Josette smiled as she looked out the window, "Not long now."
Kane swallowed hard. He started to say something, but stopped himself as Ned rapped on the window and Josette opened it.
"We decided to head on, Chaos?"
Kane sighed, "Yeah, we're not gonna stay too long."
"You got it."
As they entered the Soul Coven territory, many witches and fairies, warlocks and other community members came out to greet them, including Devonia, who'd made it back faster than their caravan had.
"You'll stay for dinner?" Devonia asked Kane.
Josette hoped he'd say yes, but he didn't. He didn't even look at her.
