"Kane, put me down!" Josette screeched as Kane carried her back to his carriage. The snickers and whispers from his den were heard—of course they would be. This wasn't even half of what Chaos Dempsey had up his sleeve.

"If you wanted me to put you down, you have put a spell on me already!" Kane opened the carriage door with one hand tossed Josette onto the seat, climbing in after her and slamming the door shut.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" Josette asked, her face flushed—her breath hitched.

"What the hell is wrong with me? You don't need to go around getting drunk in someone else's carriage, little dove. You don't have a clue what most of us are capable of!" Kane stared at her with the most serious expression that intimidated even Josette.

"Cecil is harmless!"

"You're in heat, Josette!"

"What? No, I'm not!"

Kane moved closer to her and sniffed, "You are, though.."

Josette cringed, "Ew...Why do you all know this? I thought you were only supposed to sense other wolves? I'm not a wolf, Kane."

"Well, I can smell you and it's intoxicating."

Josette didn't say anything. She found herself sitting up and straightening out her skirts, staring out the window at some of her sisters who were tidying up the camp. She even eyed Maribel who was helping in the cleanup.

"What do you care if I wanted to be with Cecil?"

"You've got your tea or do you want him to put pups in that belly of yours?"

Josette frowned, "Maybe you want to put pups in there!"

"Maybe I do!" Kane howled as he got out of the carriage and turned around, "Stay here or I swear to the gods you won't like me when I go hybrid."

Josette blinked, her bloodstream flowing with alcohol. She rested her head against the window and closed her eyes—too tired to argue.

Kane made his way to Cecil who was waiting for him.

"Come to fight me?"

Before he could get the words out, Kane had clocked him in the jaw with his fist—sending Cecil to the ground. The other wolves started to gather round to see what the fuss was about.

"You've come to stake your claim, Chaos?" Cecil said, rubbing his jaw as he tried to get up, but Kane stopped him with his hand on his shoulder, "Come on, Kane..."

"What the hell is wrong with you? You know she's in heat. You know she's vulnerable right now and you're taking advantage of that."

Cecil smiled, "So, you do care for her."

Kane stumbled backwards, "What? Of course, I care for her. Why wouldn't I?! She's.."

Cecil finally stood up, but he didn't charge after his alpha. He knew better—Kane was strong and when he was angry it didn't bode well for the opponent.

"She's what?" Cecil said, rubbing his jaw, "She's yours? No...that's not it.."

Kane seethed, "She's certainly not yours."

Cecil nodded, "Well, you keep interfering. If you would just leave us alone, maybe she'd get to know me. "

Kane shook his head, "Not happening."

"Jealousy is a different look on you, Kane," Cecil told him, "I've been watching her since the last battle and you? You didn't give her another look until a few nights ago at the castle. Now that you've had a taste of her, she's all you think about, eh? Then why Maribel?"

Kane lowered his gaze. Why Maribel indeed....

"I'm your best friend, Kane," Cecil said, "You need to let her go or figure out what you want. I wasn't going to try anything with her—I barely smelled her, but you did and that means you're interested and you know it."

Kane winced. He wasn't interested in her.

Was he?

Cecil shook his head, "I know that look, Kane. Don't fuck this up or I will not hesitate to take her from you."

"Who the hell are you to talk to me like that?"

Cecil stepped forward, "I'm talking as your best friend now, not your beta. Maybe there's something between the two of you, but she won't stick around if she doesn't feel wanted."

Kane breathed in deeply. Cecil was right—he was right most of the time which is why he was Kane's right hand.

Certainly he should have just allowed Josette to figure out who she wanted, right?

"Everyone pack up so we can head into the camp!" Kane called to his men. He glanced over at Keira who was leading her sisters and then to Maribel who was actually taking direction.

He walked back to his carriage, finding Josette leaning up against it—her body folded and gagging noises coming from her.

"Josette?" Kane approached her and gently gathered up her hair, pulling it away from her face as she vomited, "Too much fun?"

Josette rolled her eyes and heaved, "Shut up, Kane.."

Kane frowned, "I'm sorry for...everything."

Josette crouched down, taking Kane with her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief to wipe her face.

"I probably look terrible," Josette said, averting Kane's eyes.

"No," Kane smiled, "You could never look awful."

"I'm sorry for getting mad at you for no reason. You have every right to be with Maribel or any other woman you choose."

Kane shrugged, "Well, the same could go for you. Cecil seems to like you a lot."

Josette sighed, "He's nice."

"Yeah, he's a good guy,"Kane told her, "He's a much better match for someone like you."

Josette looked at him, "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying if you want to go back to his carriage then I will escort you there myself," Kane told her, "But I really don't want to do that, if we're being honest. I like you, but I don't know what the odds are of us being the real deal so I want to be with you and only you until you make it home."
