Josette's Fight

"I'm almost sure that bitch sent whatever attacked Josette after her," Kane said as he settled back around the campfire with his crew.

"Maribel?" Cecil frowned, "You think she got her in trouble and hired people?"

"Enticed is more like it," Ned nodded, "She didn't let up during the trip, either. I'm surprised she even helped her when she thought Cecil was taking advantage of Josette."

"Was she though?" Kane tilted his head to the side, "Or was she jealous of Josette again?"

"There's a code they can't break and that's one of them. You can't do harm to your sisters if they're innocent and Josette is," Cecil recalled, "If we can prove it, Maribel is done for."

Kane smiled, "Once they excommunicate that whore, she's mine. I will end her... slowly. "

"K-Kane!"

He heard Josette call to him from the carriage so Kane once again said his goodnights and joined his little dove.

"Are you alright?"

"I-I was just alone again.." Josette said, "I am sorry. I know you're busy."

"I love you, Josette," he told her, bringing her closer to him, "I know my priorities so don't you worry about that. We'll be heading out soon so I want you to rest. I won't leave you again."

Josette fisted Kane's shirt, making sure he was going to stay put. She'd been through so much and Kane knew she needed him, but he needed her, too.

"I will find out who did this, Josette," he promised as she drifted into sleep, "I will make them pay."

"A witch? A worthless witch?"

His uncle glared at Kane as Josette waited in the hall with Ned and Cecil.

"Jerome, I love her and she's going to be my mate," Kane said to his uncle who shook his head in dismay, "I have no luna—you already know this. She's mine and wants to be with me. My parents would have loved her and you will, too."

"Clearly, she can't obey the rules," Kane's aunt Cassandra said, "Or she wouldn't be powerless and excommunicated for the time being. Who's to say she isn't some spy or...or...just using you!?"

"She fled to me! To my arms, to my side! They raped her! They beat her and I will not let her go no matter what anyone in this fucking pack says. I am an Alpha and you know that you can't disown me, but you can make her life hell and I won't tolerate it!"

"We'll discuss," Jerome huffed, "Leave."

Kane stalked out of the room and ran into Josette as she lingered too close to the doorway.

"Oof!"He caught her before she fell back and held her in his arms, "Sorry..I was eavesdropping."

"I had to tell them what happened," he motioned for Ned and Cecil to return to the festivities that were taking place upon their return home from the war, "I am sorry that you heard that."

Josette sighed, "Why do they not like us together?"

Kane escorted them back to his cottage, thanking his cousin Daisy who'd provided Josette with some clothes and personal essentials.

"If you need me, just let me know," Daisy smiled at Josette, "It's a pleasure to meet you."

Josette nodded, "And you, Daisy. Thank you so much."

Daisy took her leave, guiding her younger brother, Darcy, back to the party.

"They are kind," Josette said, stripping out of Kane's clothes and getting into the tub full of steamy water and bath oils, "How do they belong to your aunt and uncle?"
