A/N I know i'm on break, but I saw this story somewhere and thought it was cute! So just wanted to share it with you guys, Cya!

Sighing contentedly, Stolas woke slowly, opening his eyes to find the bed empty and Blitz nowhere to be found. Which wasn't unusual by itself; Blitz often spent the night-time hours awake. Though this occasion felt... different somehow. The air was a little more chill, even through his plumage. And though Blitz had called hours earlier to say he'd be back late because of a job, the fact there was still no sign of him was unsettling to say the least.

A quick glance at the clock on the wall told him it was nearing midnight. Surely he should've been back by now, he thought, beginning to worry. Has something gone awry with the late night job? Did he get hurt? Has he been held hostage or... God forbid, kil-

He quickly shook his head violently and shoved that thought away. No. No, he wouldn't go there. He couldn't go there. He might not survive it if he did.

Frantically, he searched for his phone and unlocked it, and was just about to dial Blitz's number when he saw it. A note, squarely folded on the bedside table. Hanging up the call mid-ring, he reached over and picked it up, opening it carefully. Still worried it was a ransom note from one of his partner's deranged clients.

He breathed a very heavy sigh of relief when he saw Blitz's handwriting on the paper.

He gave a little hooting giggle at the cute little doodle Blitz had drawn of the two of them. Blitz may not be objectively the best artist, but Stolas absolutely adored Blitzo's little doodles. They were so full of character and showed Blitz's passion for the things he drew, which were usually a lot of horses and ponies. He still remembered receiving similar notes from Blitz when they were children. Coded messages and secret meeting places, punctuated with cute little doodles much like this. Pictures of them together, and ponies, and sometimes of the both of the riding ponies. They were all in a box somewhere, stashed away and secret, in a place not even Stella knew about so she couldn't destroy them. Thankfully she was out of his life now. Replaced by someone much better, who actually cared for him.

That fact still made him feel all warm inside. This one would go in the box with the rest. But first, he had a secret midnight meeting to attend. So after pulling on his suit and cloak, Stolas carefully refolded the note and slipped it into his pocket. Then he made his way out of the palace and picked his way out into the night.

. . .

The estate was near-silent at this hour, as was expected. Only the songs and hoots of the night birds, and the yipping calls of the night foxes could be heard. Though Via was also one of those few awake at this time, night owl that she was. Sitting in the garden on an ornate stone bench, gently turning the pages of the book she was reading. He waved at her in passing, and she smiled warmly. Though as soon as he passed she resumed reading. Though Stolas could've sworn he heard the soft tapping of her phone keys as he walked away, cloak trailing behind him. But he shrugged it off and kept moving.

Hequietly made his way over to the woods edge at the end of his estate. Admittedly flying would be faster, but he wanted to appreciate the evening a little. Owls were nocturnal creatures, after all. So he walked. Mostly in an attempt to calm his nerves, but still. He walked and felt the gentle night breeze ruffling his feather and the uneven earth under his talons.

The path to their tree was a well worn one, used more when they were kids than nowadays, but still no less special or secret. Though why in Lucifer's name Blitz asked him out here so late was a mystery.

It became even more of a mystery when he saw the trail of fairy lights glowing incandescent in the dark like a path to the fey wild. Though hopefully this path would be a lot less dangerous. But he did know Blitz liked to get himself into trouble and cause shenanigans, so the danger might not be so benign after all. Though Stolas chose to give his beloved the benefit of the doubt as he walked along the fairy-lit path.
