I meant to say this last chapter, but I'm working on the final chapter of this story. It's actually kind of terrifying that this one is almost done. But anyway, there are six more after this chapter. On my calendar I have the end going up on August 23rd, so everyone prepare themselves.
I walked down the hospital hall. I had Hayley's room number memorized. I couldn't get it out of my head if I tried. I had no idea what had happened, or what condition she'd be in. I had to prepare myself for the worst.
I stopped as I came to her room. The big windows allowed me to see her from a distance. I was holding my breath unintentionally, and I let it out as I saw her face. She was fine.
I walked up to the doorway, and paused before I entered. Hayley turned off the small TV and crossed her arms over her chest. "What are you doing here," she asked grumpily.
"You think I was gonna leave you in New York all alone," I asked. I stayed in the doorway. I felt like it was best to keep some distance between us.
"How'd you even know I was here," she asked. She rubbed her forehead with her fingertips as she tried to think. I half-smiled.
"I heard Taylor on the phone."
"Dammit, I knew I shouldn't have told him."
"He was only helping me."
"Well, you can go now. I'm just waiting to see the doctor again, and then I'll be released."
"What happened, Hayley?"
"I'm not talking about this," she yelled. We were fighting, again. It's all we ever seemed to do anymore. I took a step inside.
"We need to talk. We need to work out our problems, Hay. We're going downhill," I said. "And I hate to play the Lisa card, but this relationship is turning out like Lisa and I's. We were perfect for a while, and then all we did was fight. Which one of us is going to end up dead this time?"
"Don't even joke about that," she said quietly. She was looking down. I'd hit a nerve, for both her and myself.
"Do you wanna start over," I asked just as quiet. I walked over to the bed so I was right next to her. She looked up at me with a soften expression. She nodded and looked down at the hospital band on her arm.
"I'm not ready to talk about this."
"That's okay. Everything in the past is over now. We're starting over," I said with a smile. I had to leave because the doctor came in. I sat just outside her room, checking my phone. I told Taylor she was fine, and would be leaving soon.
Once she was released, we both got in my car. I drove her to nearest Target. We both looked like shit, and I know she didn't want to be seen in public. We were going anyway. This was crucial for our relationship.
I parked, and we both got out. "Target," she asked. I went around to her side, and took her hand.
"Where it all started," I said with a smile. I walked with her inside, and she grabbed a cart.
"Oh, would you like to go ahead of me? You have way less than me and I'm in no hurry," She offered with a smile. There was a little gap between her two front teeth.
"Are you sure? Ya know, ladies first and all," I insisted. But trust me, I really wanted to get out of there. The sooner I got home, the sooner I could get drunk. But the girl in front of me offering to trade me spots was actually really cute.
"Yeah, yeah, go ahead," she said as she pulled her cart back. She moved off to the side and let me in front of her.
"I'm Alex, by the way," I said. I would've shaken her hand if I wasn't carrying two cases of beer.
"Hayley," she smiled. She absentmindedly pushed her cart forward and pulled it back towards her. I couldn't take my eyes off her. "I've got an idea," she said as she leaned on her cart.
We walked around and looked at almost everything there. We found a couple things that we wanted, or needed for tour, and we headed for the checkout. I thought back as I watched Hayley pick a line.
"I don't want this come off the wrong way, but you're cute and I need a date," Hayley said, trailing off. Now just one person in front of me.
"Funny, I was just thinking the same thing," I said as I put the cases up on the belt. She laughed and moved the cart forward.
"Hayley," I said suddenly. She stopped, and turned around.
"Yep," she asked. She had her back against the cart, and I was standing right in front of her. I looked down at her, and I felt so many emotions. I put my arms around her waist, and then kissed her. We had a full-on make-out in Target. Do or die, right?
When we separated, Hayley laughed. "Wow, our first kiss. That didn't happen in Target," she said. She turned around and continued to a checkout. I couldn't help but laugh as I followed her.
I felt Hayley move closer to me, until there was almost no space between our faces. I opened my eyes, and Hayley glanced down at my lips. She placed her lips on mine. I kissed her back, and it was a perfect moment. I couldn't have dreamed of having a more perfect first kiss. I would've been more excited if I was more awake.
After our cart was emptied onto the checkout belt, I helped Hayley into the cart. We both put the bags in, and she had to hold some of them. I paid for the stuff, and then wheeled the cart out to the car.
Some little kids started getting jealous as Hayley passed them. Their parents wouldn't let them in the cart. I had to laugh.
We spent the rest of the day recreating our best memories together. I drove us back home, and brought her to the buses. Taylor and Jeremy met with her and tried to catch up, but she wouldn't tell them anything.
We went back to my house, and slept in my bed. The perfect end to a perfect day.
