Tess pov:
Pablo walks into the bathroom while I'm getting ready. He gives me a kiss.
''Are you ready for the big day, mi vida?'' 'Always Pablo.' Pablo presses a kiss on my nose. I giggle. I kiss him back, right on his lips.
Today is El Classico day. And this is my very first El Classico as the girlfriend of Pablo. Still, it always feels so surreal!
'Do yo wanna play some football Tess? We don't have to go for another few hours.' 'But you are much better than me Pablo!' 'That doesn't matter. I will try very hard to play fair for you, almost wife. Pablo winks at me.
Is this a signal? Is he going to ask me to marry him soon? I laugh inside and I grab Hope from her crib and take her downstairs. She smiles at me.
"Okay Tess." We walk to the backyard, Pablo grabs a ball. ''Should we just pass the ball?'' I nod. We pass the ball a few times.
I try to play past Pablo. He puts his foot out to take the ball, but I stumble and fall. I immediately grab my ankle.
'Mierda, are you okay?' 'I'm not sure, I felt something snap in my ankle.' 'I'm so sorry, darling, I didn't do it on purpose.' 'I know you didn't. But can you take a closer look ma vie?
Pablo gets down on his knees. He gently grabs my ankle. I remain silent, but inside I scream in pain. Tears well up in my eyes. 'It doesn't look good, Tess, I have a feeling it's broken or that you twisted your ankle.' I see that Pablo has tears in his eyes. Really something for Pablo. Feeling guilty even though he didn't do it.
'Don't cry, darling. I was just clumsy. And remember the first time we saw each other? You kicked the ball so hard against my head that I passed out and had a concussion and couldn't do anything for a long time. That wasn't nice. This isn't too bad. I sprained my ankle and I need to rest my ankle for a week. And even if it is broken, you are with me. You can help me.'
I shift slightly, but a shooting pain shoots through my ankle. I clench my molars. Tears are in my eyes. 'I hope it's nothing serious, mi amor. But we have to go to the hospital, I insist.' 'I think that's a good idea.'
Pablo gently lifts me up. I place my hands on his muscular shoulders. Pablo walks to the car and opens the door. When I'm in the car, Pablo walks back to pick up Hope. Then we drive away.
When we get to the hospital, Pablo grabs a wheelchair. We only sit in the waiting area for a short time, then it's my turn.
The doctor looks at my foot and feels in different places. ''We need to take pictures, maybe your ankle is broken, but I'm not sure.'' The doctor walks away to the X-ray room to prepare.
'Pablo, I'm scared. You are going to stay with me, right?' 'I'm so sorry darling, but it's not possible that I stay with you, although I would like that very much.' 'It's okay darling, it's not your fault.'
The doctor drives me to the room where the photos will be taken. Pablo has to wait in the waiting room. When I am wheeled into the waiting room, Pablo immediately stands up. 'And? Please say that it is not broken.' 'My ankle is badly bruised. I need bandages and probably a brace too.''
''I'm so sorry, mi vida.'' ''Don't. I'm actually happy! I really felt like it was broken, so I'm just relieved. But I have to use a wheelchair, because of course I can't use my arm.'' I look at my shoulder brace. The doctor has already walked away. ''That stupid thing too. It's driving me crazy.''
I look at Pablo. He smiles. "I know Tess, but it's for your own good, no matter how stupid it is." I smile. ''You're right.
I rub her thigh with my hand. We're driving on the highway and Hope is sleeping.
"Pablo, can I still come to the match?" She looks at me with a pout. I just can't say no. ''I think that's good. But stay with the girls and if the pain gets too bad, please go home.'' ''I will, ma vie.'' I smile. We drive into the parking lot of Camp Nou.
