BRAXTON
"I'm gonna go for a run. I won't be gone long." I said, walking over to where Adeline stood next to the vanity. After placing the bottle down, I turned to face her.
"Okay."she responded simply.
My golden eyes fell onto her green ones. My wolf was fighting to take over. I felt like I was in hell. She was here and yet, she still felt so far away. My wolf was desperately trying to gain control, to claim her once and for all.
I fought the urge, folding my arms over one another against my chest. My breathing was getting heavy, with it getting harder to push my wolf into the back of my mind.
"Promise me you'll still be here when I get back." I needed her reassurance, even though I knew the only thing that would give me that is if she proved herself by staying.
I watched as her face twitched slightly, her lips falling into a frown at the sound of my words.
"I promise." her voice was convincing, but my wolf still wasn't pleased.
I searched her eyes in an attempt to see if she was telling the truth. After a moment, I let out a deep sigh. My hand found it's way into my hair, running through the dark strands.
I knew she could sense my worry.
"I'm not going to leave again." Again, her words were convincing but still my doubts lingered.
I let my hand fall from my hair and dragged it down my face. Our eyes connected again as I let my arm finally drop to my side. Honestly I didn't believe her, even though it hurt to admit. I wanted to trust her. But I couldn't yet, I still felt betrayed from when she left.
"Okay." I said while making a move to leave the bathroom. I needed to shift and I didn't want to do it right here in front of her.
The feeling of her hand grasping around my wrist made me freeze. My wolf reveled in the warmth that spread throughout my arm, her touch being the cause. I glanced down at where our skin connected. The sight calmed me, pushing back the urgent need to shift. But only slightly.
"Do you believe me?" She whispered.
Looking back up at her, I felt my chest fall as I exhaled. My eyes flickered down to her lips for a brief second before I leaned down. I couldn't stop myself. The feeling of her lips against mine was soft and sweet, exactly what I needed right now. Just as I felt her lean in, I pulled back. I knew my wolf wanted more and he was already on the cusp of taking control.
"Yes, Adeline." I lied.
With that, I pulled away from her grasp. My wolf growled at me for breaking the connection before I sprinted downstairs. I felt him crawl his way to the front of my mind, causing me to feel like I was sinking back within myself. The second I opened the glass door, I shifted.
My wolf snarled in anger. He wanted to turn around. I managed to fight him and urged him to run in the opposite direction he was whining to go, back to our mate. I forced him to run past the lake into the woods.
The trees thickened as my wolf continued on, heading towards the northern border of my territory. Even though we hadn't seen or heard from the vampire since he'd said he was going to get the high coven council, I still kept a lot more pack members than usual guarding the border. I couldn't risk losing her again. I wouldn't.
Besides, when Adeline was gone, I didn't want the vampire to suspect anything or know that she wasn't even here. It felt like the best bet to play it safe and pretend we were still protecting her despite the fact I had no clue where she'd gone. My wolf growled at my thoughts, displeased that I was still thinking about when she'd left. I felt him pick up his pace as if we were running from the negative thoughts.
