BRAXTON
I've spent half my life with my wolf taking up space within my mind. I first shifted when I was fourteen years old, two years earlier than normal due to the alpha blood that coursed through my veins. Never before had I lost control of my wolf—until Adeline came into my life.
Now, I've lost control not only once, but twice.
The first time was when Axel had managed to get under my skin so deep, he scratched the surface of a rage I didn't know existed within me. But now, Adeline was not only just scratching that rage, but cutting into it and tearing it to shreds.
I couldn't stop my wolf from pulling me back and I soon felt myself fade into the background of my own head, seemingly watching from inside at the events that unfold before me.
Adeline's eyes widen as she realizes what's happening, that it's not me anymore. I marvel at the deep green shade of her iris', displayed so perfectly in the afternoon sunlight that beams through the car windows. Her faint freckles splay across the bridge of her nose and the tops of her cheeks. Her hair falls perfectly around her face, but my wolf pays no attention to the small details of her, at least not right now.
Her words 'I should give myself to them' are branded into my wolf's ears and he's blinded by the feeling of betrayal and anger at the thought of her leaving again.
"You're mine and you will never leave me again." The words escape my lips with each erratic breath, but they're not mine.
I watch as her fingers press into her upper arms as she clutches them even tighter around her chest. I can sense the unease that radiates from her body along with her intoxicating sweet scent that would normally calm my wolf. But it does nothing in this circumstance.
"Say it." My wolf growls again in a tone much harsher than one I'd ever use with her.
She makes no attempt to respond right away and swallows instead, my eyes track the movement. She's scared. My wolf ignores the thought.
My fingers clench onto the steering wheel and it makes a cracking sound under the pressure of my strength. My eyes stay locked on hers, not faltering at all, despite the fact that we're on a busy highway and our safety rests in my hands. My wolf ignores that thought too.
"Say it, Adeline." My tone holds its harshness but the volume has now morphed almost into a shout.
My wolf was not accustomed to disobedience in any form. Admittedly, Adeline had become the only exception to that standard—but she's crossed a line now and my wolf is determined to push her back over it.
"Gelida tempore." She whispers under her breath like she's trying not to let me hear, but the unfamiliar words are perfectly clear as they reach my ears.
"Your spells don't work on me, little witch." My wolf grits out between teeth, annoyance soaring at the fact that she's not giving him the response he wants.
Her lips part ever so slightly and I can practically hear her heart beat accelerate even more. I watch her chest as it heaves in a steady, controlled pace. She swallows for a second time before she responds, still in a whisper. "It wasn't for you."
I clench my jaw, not understanding the meaning of her words. Then, my gaze finally shifts from her eyes to the side of her head and then out the window behind her.
